I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before, but I want to discuss it again. :)

Would it be possible to have a multiplayer version of Transcendence, in any form? It could be simply having a server run slightly modified Transcendence, except the game has been modified to have multiple playerships, the clientside being the input and drawing routines excised from the game, and the data that is normally passed between the two pieces of code is passed over TCP.

Or, it could be something completely different, a completely independent game that is merely based on Transcendence. Instead of modifying (hacking) the existing game to work multiplayer, there would be a completely different codebase, designed for working multiplayer.

Then, there would be the problem of ships, should we read them from Transcendence savefiles, have players start with starting ships and increase their power like in normal Transcendence, or just assign random ships to the players?

Would the game be co-op, or deathmatch? Would the players be cooperating to get to the core, trying to get to the core independently, or just blowing each other to bits?

And of course, there's the question of development. Would this new game be made by George, or one of the normal devs, or would it be community-based?

What does everyone (especially George) think of all this?

Though I could be mistaking this for something else, I'm pretty sure that last response from George on this was something along the lines of 'not possible'... I think...

Yeah, every time I've seen George respond to the idea, it is usually with something like; "It is impossible for the game engine to have more than one player."
If you drop a bar of soap on the ground, is it dirty?
If a person is legally blind, and can suddenly see, is he breaking the law?
If a friend says he's going outside to get some air, what was he breathing before?

Yeah, that's what I heard too, hence the second paragraph.

I'm tempted to point to the FAQ since this is definitely a Frequently Asked Question, but I think it deserves a better response:

First of all, I totally understand why people would want a multi-player version of Transcendence. I would love one!

But I believe the following things:

1. A multi-player version of Transcendence would NOT be Transcendence. It would be a multi-player game set in the Transcendence universe. That's perfectly OK, and maybe someday it will come to pass, but it is not what I am currently interested in creating.

2. Creating a multi-player game is about more than just the technology (the game engine). Designing a multi-player game that is balanced, that is fun, and that doesn't devolve into boring "insta-kills" is actually very hard. I'm too lazy to get involved in that.

3. There are some very good multi-player games out there that you can try. Diablo is also considered a roguelike and it has a very nice multi-player version. Also, I keep on hearing great things about EVE Online--though of course that costs money. I also hear World of Warcraft is decent.

4. It's actually been almost two years since someone last brought this up. That's pretty good![/url]

avoid wow unless you want to lose your soul forever (j/k). it tends to sap away at time though. eve is good for some things but the time scale really takes it's toll after a while.. waiting for 3 months for your semi empire to build only to lose it in a night starts to wear on you.

Seriously - a forum or IRC is about as close as I will ever get to an MMO.

Well, although we won't have multiplayer Transcendence, Infinity: quest for earth is looking good. Procedurally generated, real scale galaxy, anyone?

I'm trying to write something like that. I need a game to use to show off my GalGen library.

If I wrote a MUD, would you play it? It'd pretty much just be IRC with rooms and crap.

I allways used to get hopelessly lost in MUDs. Certain instinctive navigational cues I get from full 3d get lost in text and without the subtitute of a fixed direction bird's eye view navigation is impossible for me.
