How's that transpace drive work?

So, I recently found a "jacorai" alien device for sale which I'm pretty sure is a transpace jump drive. So, how do those actually work? How do you navigate with one? I'm playing with upgradeable wingmen. Would it make sense to put that in one of them, or would that not work well?

Thanks for the help.

They're like a portable gate. They move you forward about 500ls, maybe more.

WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE ONE WHILE IT IS COOLING DOWN!

They are useful for:

-Rapidly crossing sectors (well.....they slow down the time. But realistically, you're only gonna get one use unless it's a binary)
-Dealing with the aforementioned binary systems.
-Jumping from one side of heretic to the other as you battle the xenophobes (jump past the event horizon, and you end up on the other side of the sector)
-Escaping from a battle that is about to kill you. (Be careful which way you jump......jumping out of one battle and landing in the middle of an ares shipyard is entirely possible in some circumstances, and is hellishly annoying, if not immediately leathal)
-Losing all your cargo if you use it while EMPed, or while it's cooling down after a use. You CAN regain your cargo, but it's easy to lose stuff still.

Transpace on a mule would be interesting......no idea if wingmen can use it though.

zack said that he's playing with bobby's mod, that's why I suggested to put the transpace on autons, Bobby added code so that they actually use the device, AFAIK.

You mean, Zak, who is apparently different from Zack (the Person) who speaks in 3rd person, which Zak does not.
They are different people, right?

Giving wingmen a jumpdrive doesn't really help them fight, but it does practically ensure their survival as they will use it when taking damage. Wingmen will also jump to catch up to you too, or at least I think they still do.

A large station explosion can still kill them, as can attrition without repairs or disintegration. Beware using semi-transparent shields like the trenton as they don't use it if a "shield" is below 100% damage.

Does it muck them up if they use it when EMPed like it now does to the player? If so you don't want to use it with the invincible either.

No, the jumpdrive use ability was added before that behavior was introduced, so all it does is move them 500ls in their forward direction if the last use was sufficiently long ago and it has "recharged." It might muck with the AI though, since it throws the ship out of the area without changing it's orders, but at least it won't be dead.

It's more likely to fix the AI if it breaks than to break it.

Wait, what happens if the jump drive is used during the cooldown cycle?

As of 1.02 the jumpdrive won't do anything if it hasn't recharged yet.

You got a jump failure and your cargo got scattered all around the place if you tried it in those versions. Hence why not to do it. :P
