Mostly I was just curious (for those who might be wondering, I for one intend to keep all my mods free to play) based on some ideas George had for mods, how many of you would actually buy a mod if you had to pay, say, a small sum of money for it (ie, .25c to $2). Presumably there will be some kind of quality standard, so you wouldn't see things like the swordship going up there.

I'm going to answer No, because I don't play with other mods as it is, just my own (with the exception of godmod, which, knowing alterecco, will stay CC-0)

Poll is set so you may change your vote.

I would. I would pay for a mod like I pay for apps for the iPhone.

Sadly, I don't know if I could afford all the content on Transcendence if it was pay - this is so much content! But certainly I'd try to buy as much as I could afford at a sitting.

I don't have a credit card or paypal account or anything of the sort so it's a pretty solid no for me. I'll probably wind up asking George if I can mail a check if he releases D&O chapter 2 or something similarly must have as a paid product.

D&O would be paid? AFAIK, the commercial part was just for mods.

Also, paypal is annoying.

Well, I'm from the days of BBSes (Bulletin Board Systems) when most "door games" (the pre-internet equivalent to MMOs) were shareware. Now these days, I can't even afford to subscribe to MMOs, but my point is that if it was a quality mod and I could afford it I would probably pay the download fee. Though, I think it should be done like shareware if it is done at all. Release a demo version which is free and playable, but leaves you wanting the full version. Ideally, the shareware version would be the full version which you'd have to unlock with a registration key, but I imagine it would be nearly impossible to do for mods (or at least too complicated to be worth it).

My current plan is to have the core game (the engine, plus all of D&O, parts I through III) be completely free. And of course, anyone will still be able to write free mods on top of all the free stuff or create their own free stand-alone adventures.

But I can imagine expansions and new adventures for sale (prices similar to mobile apps--$1 to $5 depending on complexity, demand, etc.) For example, maybe an expansion that includes Sol will be for sale.

In any case, there will be lots of free give-aways of the paid stuff for everyone currently in the community.

for example: the dual shields .xml just posted for download: sure i got tons of other works by great minds but if i want it: i will get it regardless because I want to see how it was done, what it is like.....we are explorers are we not?

However: .xml posted for download HAS to be watched more carefully if there is a pay/ donate system or the access to posting restricted to those with Unids so we do not have more fraudulent .xml with copied unids not belonging to the poster,

but yes: before i hit so low on my chain, i bought the Tom Paxton songs ( he made fun of Palin, i had to play it at work ) so I would definitely cough up something for extras if i got the cash. but, this would be stressful to first time authors : because if you do something for the game you got to ask yourself: would i actually pay X to play with that in my game?

The universal savings bank ideas : playership drones ( the original ) , and a few other oldies but goodies that could list up a page or so ;
So i think maybe a " pool " for trying out new .xml and vote on it to see if it gets placed for download ....

I would personally pay a couple bucks for quality extensions and mods. I wouldn't want to pay for junk. Smartphones have trained people to be used to spending small amounts of money on micro-content, and I know I'd pay $5-10 for a good, curated adventure extension. I would probably not pay more than $1 for an extension of unknown quality.

I think really the way to go is to make it very easy for people to download and play with curated content, and make it less obvious (or like it is currently) for people to download and install on their own. Don't make it difficult, just not advertised. That largely solves the piracy problem (people will pay for official, easy things if they are less than the hassle of pirating) and will provide mod-makers with something to strive for (getting into the curated or approved or featured list).

Another thing to consider is that by charging for a mod, you must be extra careful about the content you put into that mod in order to avoid legal issues. A lot of the stuff that is freely available on sites like Deviantart or any of the free 3D model sites is only free to use if you are not charging money for anything it is included in. And if you try to put in something like a TIE Fighter into your mod and charge for it, you're going to have Lucas knocking on your door saying "What the f--- do you think you're doing?!" I don't expect any official mods would have this problem of course, but it's something to think about for the rest of us.

All commercial mods would need to pass an appointed QA person/team or get george approval. That would prevent things like stolen mods, etc.

I only very rarely pay for apps on android. I just stick with the free ones most of the time.

But, yes, I would pay for transcendence mods --- once I get myself a windows computer again, that is...
