Which is better? I know lamplighter is a level above APC but APC has a number of advantages over lamplighter. APC has more range, lamplighter does more base damage etc.

Ares Positron Cannon(APC)
Level: IX
Cost: Possibly Free
Range: 100
Damage: Positron 18
Fire Rate: 3.7/second
Power Usage: 100mw
Mass: 1.5 tons
Special: Highly Enhanced Shield Damage
Enhanceable: Yes
I have used both and both are versatile in certain ways, Lamplighter is good for basecracking but only average range makes it a somewhat poor choice for dangerous capships that you need to keep some distance from, and no armor in game has protection from antimatter at the moment.
APC has nearly twice the range and does large amounts of shield damage(average 50-150 per shot) but lacks the lamplighters base damage, it can also be enhanced with longzhu spheres (and if enhanced to 150% does more damage per shot then lamplighter). Both can cut through any armor in game.
Which one do you prefer?
Lamplighter Archcannon vs Ares positron cannon
Of the two, Lamplighter by far. Even then, there are better options. I would use longzhus on IM90 or Fracture Cannon. If I cannot get enough for the weapons, or spend longzhus on a Taikon-200 shield instead, I will use a +Fast Lamplighter. IM90 is omni which means the player can fight effectively while dodging stuff, and at 150%, IM90 is powerful enough that nothing short of reflection (Dwarg behemoth) or extreme resistance (some Luminous) can stop it; and even then, it can overcome ion resistant Luminous, if you don't mind waiting long enough. Only problems with IM90 is it does not bust bases quickly, and it is heavy at 16 tons. Fracture cannon at 150% is so powerful that everything, except maybe the final boss, dies almost instantly. Its short range is not a problem when it is strong enough to kill everything almost instantly.
DPS of +Fast Lamplighter: 39 @ 5/sec, or 195/sec
DPS of +150% Ares positrion cannon: 45 @ 3.75/sec, or 168/sec
DPS of +150% positrion lancer: 22.5 * 5 @ 3.75/sec, or 421/sec
DPS of +150% IM90: 43.75 * 3 @ 3.75/sec, or 492/sec
DPS of +150% Fracture Cannon: 125 * 2 @ 3.75/sec, or 937/sec
DPS of +Fast Lamplighter: 39 @ 5/sec, or 195/sec
DPS of +150% Ares positrion cannon: 45 @ 3.75/sec, or 168/sec

When I finally got the mission to test the weapon: it is supposed to fight the Ares : I went to a Shipyard: nearly got myself killed.
I do not take the weapon out against the Ares after that. I think it needs something but to this day and many experiments in .xml later: I still have no clue of what or how to adjust the weapon to make it better for the Fleet.
But : I hear there are some that like it , this is good , I just do not think it has a place in my fighting scenes yet : so I take it, I return it : I get the pat on the back and cash my check at the end of the shift

I tend to enjoy camping on top of a ares shipyard with lamplighter and destroying the spawning ships, as for fracture cannon i did not know you could enhance it
but have always hated its short range. Im90 is a sweet weapon, but i can hardly ever find one for sale and even then its hard to collect enough rin for it before the ringers and teratons run out of rin. Pretty much the same problem with the positron lancer.

I get almost all of my high level equipment from the Teraton fabricator. There is a reason why I call the fabricator one of the most overpowered features in Transcendence. Teraton stations are common enough that I have yet to play a game that did not spawn a fabricator.
Normally, I dislike weapons with short range, but a +150% fracture cannon is so strong that nothing short of the final boss can threaten you if you do not let yourself get caught by the thermonuclear explosions that inevitably erupt from targets you destroy. If you have +150% Taikon-200, even those explosions will not be a threat. Target gets into range, it just dies. Even ships with non-critical armor segments die quickly too.
Iocrym plasma weapons are the only plasma weapons that the game considers energy weapons, and eligible for enhancement by longzhu sphere.

I strongly prerfer the APC. 90 ls range is a good thing: it outranges the Ares Lightning Turrets, or if you were flying for the Ares against the CW it outranges the TeV 9.
The APC can also be longzhu enhanced, which the lamplighter cannot.
The IFC is a suicidally short ranged weapon. Why use something that puts you in range of every weapon in the game when you don't have to? So what if things die faster. You die faster too. Bringing a chainsaw to a gunfight isn't much better than bringing a knife.

Eh, not necessarily. The IFC is about tactics, and HP. if you've got armor and shields good enough to use the IFC, then it's brilliant. otherwise.....not so good. I always feel that if you've got a stupidly big shield and very heavy armor, it's best to use all of it.
....that said, I usually use something more practical against the iocrym, just because I run out of longzhus long before then.

Because the enemy dies so fast that it does not have a chance to kill the player. The enemy may get a shot or two off, then it is DEAD! The only way the player can die from this is if he blunders into the thermonuclear explosions released by some of the ships as they are destroyed. Having Desperate Escape as a backup in case the player gets a bit too careless helps. The only time the Fracture cannon is a bad idea is against the final boss, because its Avalanche cannon is equivalent to a +100% Fracture cannon. Even then, this can be ignored long enough with Defend.Atarlost wrote:The IFC is a suicidally short ranged weapon. That said, I use +150% IM90 as my primary late game weapon, and a +150% Fracture cannon as a basebuster/backup/enemy-must-die-now weapon.

You basebust with that thing? Both range and shot speed are ranges so it follow the inverse square law after 10 light seconds. That's less than the radius of vtThermoExplosion2, which is the smallest explosion on any station by the time you get it.

If it is at +150%, YES!Atarlost wrote:You basebust with that thing? Both range and shot speed are ranges so it follow the inverse square law after 10 light seconds. That's less than the radius of vtThermoExplosion2, which is the smallest explosion on any station by the time you get it.

For targets that go nuclear on death, I do one of the following:
* Tank it. +150% Taikon-200 absorbs nuclear explosions very well.
* Invoke Defend before the final blow. Self-explanatory.
* Attack from its maximum range. Okay, I lose some damage, but I am safe enough.
* Attack until target is at 95+% damage, then retreat and finish it off with the IM90 or other weapon with longer range.
When I am restricted to two weapons, either due to EI500 or weight problems with the other two ships, I want something that can do things better than the IM90. For me, that means basebusting, wreck clearing, and/or raw DPS when I need to defend an NPC from the enemy. Fracture cannon is my choice. If positron lancer had WMD, I would consider it, but alas.
