Quick guide on how to be a succesful pirate:

Rule #1: DO NOT kill freighters. They don't carry all that many goodies, and if you kill one you have a good chance of never being able to dock at Commonwealth stations again. Basically, if it has "Freighter" in its name, play nice with it.
Addendum A: Don't kill freighter escorts; these are usually Korolov-aligned; kill them and your Korolov access will be refused from then on.
Addendum B: If you see a freighter under attack by hostiles, you can sit back and let them kill it, then move in for the loot. You can even CAREFULLY help out the hostiles a little. As long as you don't deliver the coup-de-grace yourself, you should be good to go.

Rule #2: Any other friendly ships are fair game, UNLESS they are docked at a friendly station or in the process of doing so. If you kill them during this time, the friendly station will revoke your docking privileges. Many non-combat ships will flee from a friendly station if you attack them lightly while they are docked (e.g. Sapphires, IAVs, Borers).
Addendum A: You can even kill Borers after you rescue them from Centauri raiders during the mining missions. Nobody will be the wiser...
Addendum B: I'm pretty sure you can freely kill Huari destroyers after you have allied with them, but I could be wrong.

Rule #3: DO NOT blow up any friendly stations (excepting Ferian or Teraton stations, possibly Ringers) -- if you destroy a Corporate vendor or Commonwealth station, the ENTIRE FACTION will turn hostile. Good luck completing the game then.

If you kill a freighter, while there are entities friendly to the Commonwealth in sight of it, and there are no active enemies in sight of your ship, you will be declared a "Pirate!", and become wanted by the Commonwealth as a felon.

Not quite, you need to be sure that your victim is also not a guard of a station. If you intercept and kill a station guard, even if the ship is nowhere near its station, the station the guard belonged to will become angry. Guards are usually gunships, such as, but not limited to, Britannias, Centurions, Manticores, and (sometimes) Ronins.

If you kill any Huari ship or station for ANY reason, the Huari become enemies permanently. Depending how powerful your ship is and how greedy you are, this may not be a bad thing. Huari ships have good loot. (Hint: Befriend the Huari, complete all of their quests, then kill them for maximum loot.)

Rather, if the faction is Black Market, Commonwealth, Corporate, or Ringers, you become a wanted criminal for that faction. The faction will not turn red and shoot on sight. Instead, the faction will remain green, but you will be arrested when you dock at a station. Commonwealth will put the accused on trial, which may result in acquittal, fines, or imprisonment. Corporate and Ringers automatically imprison all wanted criminals, ending the game. Black Market will collect a fine or kill you.

All Ferian ships that belong to a colony you destroy will turn red and try to kill you. Very dangerous but can be exploited for profit.

Remaining Teraton stations simply spawn more defender satellites.

Just figured the guards-hostile thing out today, and you are absolutely correct on every point. Thanks.

Silly Pilots, Pirate stuff is for Pros !
:)

I have spent many nights testing the trial systems I created , crimes and punishments for some of my adventures : I also made VERY bad mistakes in my early games......

Friendly ships are ONLY fair game when they have the 'Gate Order : if they are heading for the gate they are no longer counted : you may kill everything EXCEPT that which belongs to Korolov ( all freighters belong to Korolov unless you have extension added non-Korolov ones )

Wandering ships: in some systems you might find patrolling ships that simply wander the system near the edges ( regardless of being friendly or not ) : these are fair game being as they are Encounter ships and their station is usually a wreck or container laying around someplace. DO NOT shoot the leader until last : deal with the escorts first, the leaders usually do not shoot back anyway ( very rare ).

NEVER shoot a docked ship : friendly or not : at the Black Market there are often Hostile ships that dock there : but the Black Market is Neutral to most factions : If you shoot a normally hostile ship docked at a Black Market that station will not be happy with you.

BEST ideas : I usually do this with the Sung : get the Hostiles to shoot at you : drag them to a friendly station:
HOWEVER That is not always a great Idea, some stations ( like the Black Market ) have turned on me for doing that ( and I never fired a shot ).

Looting wrecks is cool: making a Pirate Frigate or other big Beasty chase you is really good wreck looting fun: just not fun to be out-gunned for awhile.
Do a escort mission or two: the Frigates will start to come: see where they are and then ( after you complete the mission) hunt them: get them to come after you: they will kill everything they can until they die trying to get you.

Ares: they never play fair and the Phobos is totally trying to lure us in these days : often I wish I had that target seeking missile I once read about to get the station and make them all come to the Ringers for Dinner :)

Warning: 3 Deimos can destroy a Ringer : found that out a few times.
Flying Irresponsibly In Eridani......

I don't like to kill pirates in cold blood ..I do it.. but I don't like it..
