Buy stuff from Black Market. Resell the stuff to make money (or to recover some of it, since high level weapons in Black Market are more expensive than in a Commonwealth station)
Dock again with black market to get promoted.

The most important things that the black market is offering are: XM900 missiles for your NAMI launcher if you want to stockpile them for later in game, reactor upgrades and high level device installations at the Shipyards. You don't need a high black market level for those.

Currently, getting a higher level in BM gives you access to some free upgrades and errands. But, IMHO, if you have the money to get a high BM level, you also have the money to get those upgrades, or better.

Highest I ever got was Sindikat Member. Not sure if there are errands available at any level other than Smuggler, and my last game ignored my mid-level gladiatorial Smuggler asking for work at at the Rigel BM, for some reason--just another reason to run The Network.

Problem was that I got the mil-ID about the same time, so the BM tended to be an income-generator. Run drugs from for early income, run guns to for late-game income.

I started to wonder if there was going to be a special mission or something. Highest rank I got was Sindikat Lieutenant, and they had no better stuff than the Ringers.

Install smuggler's cargo hold. Buy illegal items. Sell to Victorian nightclub. Make profit. Level up.
BTW: If your rank is high enough, the armory in Commonwealth fortress gives you stuff 35% off. BM pays ((0.95*standard price)*2) the standard price . Buy weapons from armory, sell to BM, be rich.

Duh. It's the BLACK MARKET. It sells illegal stuff, sorta hence the name.

So what is the highest rank in the black market anyway?

Sindikat Lord. Getting that (or any other) rank is not worth the trouble in a standard game. The only way to increase rank past Enforcer is to buy illegal items from the Black Market... then sell them back (to the Black Market), then buy them back again, and repeat because Black Market stations do not generate enough Illegals in the game. The only benefit of higher rank is one-time freebies per rank (and less inflated prices on military items for Sindikat members). The freebies do not make up the money you lost from the aforementioned buy-and-sell cycle.

The only other deal that may be worse for the player is feeding several level 9+ items to Dvalin at the Rasiermesser factory for a unique ion cannon that is WORSE than the Ferian cannon.
