Instead of the instant death penalties you have in the game now they could switch your ship with a really weak ship. (with reactor penalties and all)
Then you would have to earn enough money (or whatever you have to do to get a new ship) to get a regular ship.
You could also have enemies that take your old ship and dump you in a weak ship and you would have to find some way of getting a new ship.
I think this would be a fun use of changing ships in game (it would give you a good reason other than the standard leveling up kind of thing)

you could also be able to track down and re-jack your ship!
Sounds like Grand Theft Auto.TedStudley wrote:you could also be able to track down and re-jack your ship!

I can see it now... A little guy in a spacesuit tossing people out of their airlocks and flying away in their ships.

Exactly what I suggested in the "pirateing? " topic I made. I love it!

Though in grand theft auto, you didn't have to worry about a car carrying a crew of space marines in the back...
Hey, wait a minute, in GTA, there are never any passengers in the cars when you hijack them. Or if there are, they just sit there and don't cause any trouble. Oooh, realism hole! Realism hole!

Well...what would you do if some armed person who took out a person and just hijacked a car with you inside? "Excuse me, this isn't your car. Please get out."
Maybe they're at gunpoint...but either way...how's the military(or police) going to know that I just jacked a ship? I don't imagine space cells/phones.

Is always possible to have "panic-button" (build in ship) to be pressed in case of emergency with preset states (like ship damaged, need help in repair, out of fuel, need fuel, ship boarded- pirates here...) can be pressed manualy or auto by event.
And is always posible to have buil in short-range radios in spacesuits (like today astronauts).
And of course - hijack space ship will be always hard, civilian - you will need "tunnel" to board moving ship or need to comunicate with captain and force him to stop (or you will be destroyed) and then you can fly with sopacesuits.
Boarding of military ships...well, this will be even harder, you vill need assault shutles and need to count with causalties.

hmmm, losing boarding ship in every boarding action is not so smart and can be wery expensive. Or you launching "cockpit" to switch ships ?
