So frustrating!
Another decent cash cow is upgrading armor in Eridani. Sell all your rice and any weapons you can find from the centauri raiders. Take all that profit and buy a few barrels of ablative paste either from the main station or an armor dealer if there is one. If you have found a few pieces of good armor (damaged or not) install them on your ship and use the paste. Any upgraded armor will sell for double! I have made close to 10K creds in Eridani just by getting lucky and finding 4 light meterosteel and some other good loot.
You can also buy ores from the miners and sell them for a small profit at the Enclave or just do missions for the miners too.

I finally remember how to make lotsa dough! Just don't upgrade your shields/weapon. Instead buy mining gear and mine for a bit, it helps to be listening to music since mining can get boring
