OK, I'm not having a no-buy game, I'm having a 'why would I spend money?' game.
Xiphon in Eridari, Lancer and Class 5 before the arena, and a Sung Citadel just dropped a Fusionfire before Sanctuary...
I need all my cash to keep my reactor up to spec...
Now the question is going to be whether I can get through the late game without declaring war on the Teratons for a weapon supply

A few systems later... Ion flame cannon... not my usual choice, but should do nicely for a while... unless a random Ares freighter drops 2 lightning cannons and a positron cannon before I even get to the next system...
I thought this would be hard, but so far I'm getting really nice loot.
Smartcannon, nami, and turbolaser before Rigel, a full set of heavy metoersteel just after. I backtracked, got an accelerator and took the arena, then went on to find a lancer before Charon (from a smuggler ship no less, I bought a nova50 and gave the 25 to my mule).
I got a targeting program and visual display upgrade before st. K. too.
My mule has mismatched armor (half regenrating light blast plate) a class 3 deflector, a ceratops 1T and 3 light omsk for when I need it, barrels, and ammo, so I'm set for at least a few more systems, and fuel isn't even an issue without a shield draining it.
I think the sung and ventari will shred me when they start showing up in numbers, unless the rng keeps being nice.
EDIT: now in Sanctuary: The sung and dwarg are whittling away at my armor faster than my patchers can handle, fuel isn't going as far, and my reserves of smartcannon shells are dwindling (missiles are piling up though).
Up until now I hadn't gotten any better weapons, armor, or a decent shield, but the sung citadel just coughed up an omni tev9, two longzhus, and 30k worth of micronukes, so I'm back in business, and eagerly waiting for more citadels.
