thsi is simple task - you will dock in weapon dealer/research station/military base - and you will get one interesing mission (if yours rank is high enough) - testing of new weapon prototype - your fist mission will be simple - test it on on dummy targets - you will fly to destination - but what ? wepon have malfuntioned and disabled zours shield and you are atacked by pirates at this moment ? Hope, you will surive. ASfter you return to base, chief technicant Says : Oooops, we we swaped these two conectors. This time it will be ok. OK, you will fly second round - this time against live enemyies - but hey, weapon misfiring !! - well, return to base. This time you finaly got working weapon prototype - after flying third combat round - killing main enemy base - you will get reward - second produced weapon of new type (you will return back prototype for furter testing) .
It will be very good wepon, but not gamebraking.
ANd it is posible to have weapon which randomly/by select switch between damage types ? e.q laser/particle/another - simply something like antiborg weapon from startrek.

Thats my point - you will have specialized anti-luminous weapon. Not good enough to kill more powerfull enemies, only to these annoing "flys". (and less powerfull).

I like the idea of a weapon test mission. Along the same lines, it would be pretty cool to have a test pilot mission, especially if a future version of Transcendence allows players to change ships. You'd dock your ship at the base and fly off in a test plane, with orders to test out its new weaponry (i.e. kill 10 enemies), test its engines (i.e. fly to certain coordinates and back), or test its shields (i.e. absorb 10 hits). Since it's a test plane, you aren't guaranteed that its systems will all continue functioning throughout the mission, and you could always just fly off with the test plane (although it would make you an enemy to the commonwealth) and abandon your old ship.
The anti-luminous weapon is a neat idea too... you could make it like the Jotun shield generator (I think it's the Jotun) that can be configured to provide different levels of shielding by the player, but allow the player to switch between laser/particle/ion shots.

This sounds interesting and I like the idea. One thought, however... Would having such a weapon deem it necessary to take up two (or more) slots?
