Is there some explanation somewhere as to why certain factions simply attack you on sight? I mean, its obvious why pirates and outlaws would do this, and perhaps the Ares if they consider you to be a part of the Commonwealth that they are at war with. But what about the other factions like the Dwarg and the Ranx? Why are they automatically hostile, while other factions like the Teratons and the Ringers are friendly?

I mean, assuming there's not some reason lodged into the story elements somewhere, wouldn't it be more interesting if, in order to progress deeper you needed to complete missions for one faction or another that would determine which factions are your friends and enemies?

I mean, suppose you enter an area with two opposing factions, and you have the choice of siding with one against the other. You go to destroy an base owned by one faction in order to complete a mission for another faction - afterward the one faction will assist you further on while the other faction will be enemies.

I suppose it just makes the game more fun to play being able to blast aliens into little bits. Perhaps the human/commonwealth ships that encountered the factions before the player were aggressive and now they assume the player will be too. Perhaps they are just very aggressive species. It would be relatively easy to change the default sovereign dispositions so something neutral but then you must live with the guilt of possibly starting a war with them.

Because it's very profitable to blow up ships and loot them?

they are all humans (not the luminous)

Probably some are like the Hauri or the Benin- very xenophobic, while others are simply innately aggressive. Yet others are openly hostile to the CW (such as the warlord factions).
