Since its possible to assign location offsets and arcs for weapon slots on player ships, it would be cool if we could also assign names to weapon slots, just like armor, and be able to choose which slot to install a particular weapon at. So if a ship has, say, a frontal turret, a port turret and a starboard turret, then you can choose which slot to install a particular weapon in.
Also, if you assign the laser that comes equipped on the freighter to omnidirectional=true, then any weapon that is equipped in that slot will be omnidirectional. That makes it not just a perk to have an omnidirectional starting weapon, but an actual ship feature: this ship comes with an omnidirectional weapon slot. Similar things could be done with rear-firing slots or slots that auto-target within a particular arc.
I figure the more you can do to change the play styles between ship classes, the better.

This is what I was hoping to do with my turrets (via overlays), though they'd have functional graphics too (specific to the ship, and not all would have them - hornet battle pod for one)
It wouldn't be the weapon itself firing though, just a script creating the weapons fire.
