With the upgradeable wingmen mod, how far have people been able to take their crew? Has anyone gotten them to Heretic? Survived the fight with the Iocrym? If so, what's the best way to do this?
Only Rama doesn't have a point at which he leaves.
I haven't used UGW in 1.0 but I'd guess a lazarus, regen on something like transuranic, and some patcher arms would do the job. And a jumpdrive since they're supposed to use them now. Transuranic has loads of HP and is disintegration-proof, and the Lazarus is insane when you're not paying to fuel it and don't have to worry about overloads.
Add a bushido enhancer and an ion flame cannon. Rama should switch to the latter when within its range and use his starting Katana at longer, and either are Iocrym killers with the enhancer.
For a Mule you want an omni instead. The Ares Lightning Turret is probably the best. I don't know if the AI will chain fire them if you give it several.

So, if Jenna is going to check out, when does she do that and what does it look like? Does she just disappear, or does she say she won't go any further with me? Will I have an opportunity to retrieve all of my cool equipment?

Volkov will leave abruptly in st K.s I think, but Jenna will complain about being far from home a few systems before she leaves. The exact number is something I can't predict.
And to the question at hand, My wingmen (the ones that don't leave, anyway) usually make it all the way to Heritic, but I have them sit out the bigger fights that are likely to kill them.
