Will I have a choice to buy other ships beyond the starting 3 later in the game? Vers 1.3

No.

Though a player ship changing function was added in a recent release, there is currently no way to change your ship over the course of the vanilla game.

There are a few mods that let you change ships, but I don't know if any of them are completely finished.

Thanks - Is there any point in venturing beyond the outermost orbit lines shown on the map, or is it empty space? Seems I always run out of fuel and don't want to go too far if there isn't anything out there.

buy a bigger reactor.
There can be stations out there.

Also: ship changing in the main game will NOT be part of PART 1; but WILL be part of PART2/3 - so what curudan said was only partially correct.

In what way does a bigger reactor help with this?

Bigger reactors have bigger fuel tanks so you can stay out longer.

It's empty (and lonely) space out there beyond the outermost orbit, currently. You usually get to the outermost special stations by doing missions.
