I've finally discovered why I'm having such trouble keeping my small ships centered when doing their facing rotations. It is a bug/design flaw with the Arbitrary Rotation tool. Here's a few screenshots to show the problem. In this first screenie, you can see the PREVIEW of the rotation before I hit the rotate button. Note that it is not highlighting a thin slice along the bottom and right edges....

And here is the actual rotation after I hit the rotate button....

This tiny offset is not noticeable on the larger ships since it is only off by about 1 pixel most of the time. I have come up with a temporary, but annoying solution by putting the image into window twice the needed size to make sure no part of the image is clipped after rotation and then copy/pasting it to a window of the needed size and centering the image manually before anchoring it.

This works, but basically doubles the amount of time it takes to do the facings for the small ships. If anyone knows of a better way or another free program for doing the facings of a 2d image, please let me know.

Location: Hmm... I'm confused. Anybody have a starmap to the Core?

Thanks for bringing this up. I was thinking about going full 2d for Star Network after seeing Starfarer but I didn't know that rotate was a bit quirky.
Mind making a tut for the wiki on making 2d graphics? :D

No problem. I am using GIMP 2.4 at home since the limitations of my current computer prevent me from ugrading my copy of Windows XP to include service pack 3 which is required by the latest version of GIMP for Windows XP installations. It's possible the rotation problem is no longer an issue in the latest version, but I haven't looked into it yet. I'll try to work up a 2d graphics tutorial for the wiki if you want me to, but I'm only good at manipulating existing images. I won't be able to give any tips on creating a 2d ship from scratch. It might be a few days before I get around to it though.
