So, I decided to play Transcendence 0.7...

General discussion about anything related to Transcendence.

Okay, never having played Transcendence 0.7, I thought I'd try it.

It appears you start with only one player ship, the Sapphire, in the middle of nowhere, with no help text.

So, I looked at the map, found what looked like Starton Eridani, and headed there.

I did what I normally do at Starton Eridani, went to the Trafalgar Pub and sat at the bar.

I got a doc screen where a merchanteer from America struck up a conversation, and asked me where I was going. I suppose I found a bug, as, though I could move the mouse over any of the 3 choices, and hilight them, I couldn't click on them and get them to be accepted by the game, couldn't escape out of the doc screen, and ended up having to kill the game with the task manager.

Then I got the wild idea: what if we could turn it into an Adventure mod for Transcendence 1.2, run it in the current engine, and let people play the game as it originally was released?

Well, I tried just putting the 1.2 Beta 4 executable in the directory and running it. I got the following error:

Code: Select all

Transcendence: Unknown Design Element: <AppliedTheology>
And in the Debug.log, it couldn't play the soundtrack TranscendenceIntro.mp3 (so apparently that's hard-coded into the game engine).

Oh well, George, I suppose there are other things besides <AppliedTheology> in 0.7 that wouldn't work (like perhaps the screen layout) in 1.2b4. Still, it's an interesting idea.

George:

Do you think it would even be possible to convert 0.7 to a downloadable adventure on the Multiverse, or have there been too many changes to Transcendence (with coding and interface)?

It's a really interesting idea. I do think there have been too many changes to make it an easy process.

The other thing to consider is that is 0.7 is similar to later versions except it's missing lots of content. There is very little deprecated content in 0.7, so it might not be that interested.

But you might try this program: http://transcendence.kronosaur.com/extr ... er0.5.html

Doing a downloadable version of that would be cool.

If you want I can extract all the sprite sheets (I already extracted a few to show on IRC - was trying to draw inspiration from it's content for the Frontier of TSB)

I would wholeheartedly support remaking Frontier in the Transcendence engine. While it was never easy, or particularly complete, it was still a fun thing to mess around with, and had some interesting things that didn't make it into Transcendence.
