I was looking at the models (THANKS SO MUCH! :D ) and I noticed that the ares shipyard appears to have giant engines on the bottom...

Could it be...? That this is really a super-giant ship? Or am I mis-interpreting the appearance of the large grey objects on the bottom?

Wait... Models?!

You mean... If we've got the right software, we can 40 frame(Or, heaven forbid, 80 frame...) all those ships we wanna fly around in and make 'em look decent?

Yes, George just released the meshes and textures today. There is a thread in shipyards with a link

80 facings will probably give you some issues. The engine does not handle it well.

Well, the Ares don't have carriers....and while the Polar is bigger than anything the CW fleet has, a mobile station is probably a good thing for the Ares to have.

Also most of the stations must somehow get there where they're residing! I don't think they will use thousends of transporters and travel through several systems to just build a station. It's easier to equip a station with big engines load everything with fuel and slowly get where you want to be. After that you downgrade engines to stationary use and ready :)

Exactly!

Also, there's the matter of keeping the things in the correct orbit...which is important. Even a utopian society like the Ares has trouble when it keeps falling out of orbit.

Imagine what an Ares Shipyard colliding with a planet would look like! :D

EDIT: Interestingly, we know that the commonwealth dry dock/korolov station is assembled in situ......because you get the chance to see one being assembled if Korolov in Charon gets blown up.

It would be quite an interesting mod, station construction......and since quite a few smaller stations are either Pre-fab (Tinker, CW Residences, Agristation, Medical Station, smaller CW stations) or based on simple things (Container habitat)......it's quite likely that there would be a need for them to go up every so often, AND that the player could be called upon to help with construction/defense of the construction site.......

It also appears like the Armor stations may be movable, although it's hard to tell (since I don't have the model to look at...it just LOOKS more like a movable platform).

heh. Imagine trying to tow a corporate armor station into place with a hornet playership. :D

Here's a question....

Having looked at the model for the CSC Europa (I can't actually work out camera placement controls, so can't actually LOOK at the front and sides of the standard CSC model), it's possible to see the placement of the 4 TeV9s....2 on each side. So what are those things sticking out at the front of the CSC?

(Yeah, I'm inept with camera placement controls....used to things like sketchup, where it's designed to be picked up in 5 seconds flat)

I always assumed they were communication arrays.

I was amazed how /flat/ the CSC is... O_o

Yeah. The flight deck is seriously thin. A recovery accident would be a serious issue...

Personally, I'd go for sheltered launch tunnels, that can be pressurised if needed, then pumped out and open to spce to launch and recover the fighters.

You'd need pretty hefty doors though, and probably over-hanging armor arrays......

But then, I'd also scrap the construction of CSCs and replace them with a larger number of smaller escort carriers....and re-arm the Scarab with hanzo and/or some of the other military weapons that aren't used in vanilla.... so it can act as a support ship.
