First I'll explain what happened.
I started a new game and I'm now in the second system. I just destroyed an anarchist gathering and looted an unknown auton. Curious as I am, I activated it and you can guess what happened...
Right, a defective auton. So far, no problem. Well, actually I did have a problem: I didn't have a weapon to easily destroy this little pain in the butt, nor did I have the credits to buy a good one (for now).
I did have a mining laser. So I lined up carefully and then let hem eat laser fire. At this point, his shields still recharge. I manage to bring them down and do 30% damage to it (I have a target program installed). The auton retreats, I keep my targeting on it.
His shields recharge and it comes back for round 2. I take its shields down again and do more damage (64%).
Round 3 starts. Here the little auton gets in trouble. I take down its shields again and do 87% damage. In the meantime we pass by a centauri stronghold, that I haven't destroyed yet. The auton retreats, but passes by too close to the stronghold and they open fire. It is now 100% damaged, not destroyed. It is still retreating, 1500+ range and still its shields don't recharge...
Defective Auton shields don't recharge

I've also notiiced that when you first activate one, its shields are down and start recharging-best time to open fire on 'em!

This is a feature, not a bug.
Defective autons are equipped with a hull plate ionizer; the same shield as the wolfen, in fact. Anyway, the shield's hit points are based on the strength of your armor. As you damage the armor, the shield becomes less powerful.

Agreed. That part sounds like a bug.
Personally, I don't think defective autons should retreat when their shields are down (they're defective!)
