I find that in the mid-game, where there are those nebulos systems that have *tons* of stations there is usually around 3-6 Sung Fortresses. Needless to say fighting this number of the same station that is hard to kill can be very annoying. A somewhat milder effect also goes with the Luminous Assemblers and Ares Communes as there is around 1-2 stations over 6-9 systems.
This isn't a *huge* problem but it would be nice to have this -- for lack of a better term -- moderated. I suggest that the Sung, Ares (possibly two for this oen) and possibly even Luminous each get a new kind of station. Also a (smaller) new faction for the mid and late-game would help too (separate or leveled) although I have no ideas for one.
The sung could get a research lab surrounded by sung defence satelites. This station may have an out-of-depth Sung ship or weapon, but would be relatively quick to kill.
The Ares could use a fortress (the Commune sounds like a civilian installation). I imagine a donut-shaped structure with 3 AAC's on the station itself. A few Tundras, a squad of Sandstorm, and one Cometfall or a different Ares capship could round it out.

Good point. The repetition is entirely due to the lack of enemy sovereigns at the high-levels.
I like your proposals--some new factions and some new stations for the existing sovereigns.
The Ares, for sure, need more stations.

the Sung could also reappear in the late-game with new buildings and ships. Sort of like a new faction altogether except that the theme (naming system, offence/deffence balance etc.) remains the same and that the old ships could still appear in the new stations.
Note: I am not so good at making names.
Sung Slave Laboratory:
This is where the Sung study things like the Luminous drones, the Transpace Jupdrive, and the local human populous. This station's defese would probably be a mix of prototype defence satelites, prototype ships (like ones that can jump short distances), and a small regiment of regular force. The station itself would probably have specific weaknesses and strong points.
Sung Fringe Outpost:
This would be much like the Sung Fortress, except having slighly different graphics, slighly higher hp, much greater damage, and uses new Sung ships. Due to the nature of the defenses (eg. hp-based), this would be less common than other types of Sung stations
Sung Fringe Fortress:
Armed to the teeth with weapons (like a CW station post st. K), and ships, this is the station that is meant to make sure the Sung are not driven out of Ares/Luminous space. There should be at least one new Sung capship (not necesarily the one with the QAC part, although this one could still use a QAC), along with a force capable of reconing with a CW station.
This station could have a shield, removed from the station by several ls which can be disabled by merely attacking the station itself (if you can get the courage, for this station will still have Sh3lds down)
Here is one for the Luminous.
Luminous controled Sung Laboratory:
An experiment gone wrong. The Luminous AI have been reprogramed to use Sung weapons, but are as Xenophobic as ever. They even destory other Luminous. Strange Luminous assembler station in the center, destroyed/reprogrammed Sung implements around.
And two more for the Ares.
Ares Fortified sattelite:
sort of like a CW nav-beacon except is defended by Ares ships and can shoot.
Ares Offensive outpost:
The Ares use these easy-to-build (and not-so-hard to destroy) structures as jump-off points for assults on CW stations and CSCs. Usually heavily defended by ships, but fairly weak in structure. Likely to have 1-2 Commetfalls, along with several Tundras and several Sandstorms.[/i]
