Could we get a sub forum for tutorials and samples?

Talk about anything not related to Transcendence.

There are so many great and small threads buried in the shipyard and other places that deal specifically in teaching people about modding and playing the game, and when I say buried, I mean deeply and quickly.

Does anyone else think that these type subjects deserve a section of the forums?

I know shipyards is meant to be this sort of place but the ideas, help on specific projects, and general questions tend to bury the more general help threads that don't get some glue thrown at them.

I would love to see a little section (moderated for content, perhaps) that was just devoted to tutorials and sample scripting.

I would even devote some time to writing more help threads... which I don't do now because they just get buried too quickly and nobody seems to read them because the threads are buried and people just post new questions and I can write the answers again and again and again.. or just ignore the issue like I have tended to lately.

George mentioned reorganizing the forum in this thread: Community

And I agree, it's a good idea! Whatever happened to that discussion? Oh, it got buried...

An excellent idea Periculi.

yeah, I've done a couple of tutorial threads and I expect they're going to be buried pretty soon.

You can't do subforums in phpbb2 unfortunatly...
maybe a second forum beneath the mod forum?

Well, it's a matter of terminology. I would call this forum a sub forum (Off-Topic). I would call the entire application (phpBB2) a forum.

So we can add a tutorials (sub) forum, whatever we like to call it.

I like the idea.

you do realize that the fun with series is a tutorial type series and that would be too many threads to sticky

I would love to have a Tutorials subfolder inside the Shipyards forum.

(and maybe a couple of moderators that would stick/unstick important threads and clean/move questions to the correct forum ?)

Moderators is also something that this forum needs - there's not enough regular contact with anyone with authority around here.

A couple of alternatives:

OPTION A:
1. I create a new forum for "Tutorials & Guides"
2. No one can post in the forum directly, but a set of moderators can pull threads or posts from other forums and "promote them" to the Tutorials & Guides forum.
3. The moderators (3-4 in number) would be appointed by me based on experience and desire.

OPTION B:
1. I create two new forums: one for Mod Samples and one for Player Guides.
2. Anyone can post to the new forums, but we make clear that the only valid posts are samples and guides (i.e., no one should post questions or other non-relevant posts).

Is there a consensus on one option vs. the other? Are there other alternatives that we should consider?

options!

Option B, I suppose.

And maybe add some moderators (who could then fix the UNID thread to be current)?

I prefer option a, but make it easy for someone to ask for their work to be moved there.

Edit:

Though this sounds like a good idea too. We really do need moderators!
I think either option would be fine with me, as long as we can get some mods.

IMHO, I think option A would be best for four reasons (off the top of my head).

1) Since it would be no-post, it would be kept tidy-clean, categorized and organized, making it easy for anyone to find what they're looking for--if it were there, of course.

2) Tut's and guides could be suggested in the current forums and once they are written and buffed out, be "promoted" as George stated, to the T&G forum.

3) Adding new open forums would still suffer from the buried post syndrome over time--making it harder to find what you're looking for.

4) Having a no-post forum would prevent flaming, spamming and Moderator babysitting within it.

As for Moderators, I would volunteer (currently have 4 years experience)--providing there are other Moderators as well.
