I think that's just a reference for sov in most cases- and so there would be 1 for each sov type.

When setting up a playership wingman, does it matter which controller you use to get the communication dialog?

"auton" gives them wait, attack
"fleet" gives them break and attack, formations 1,2,3, attack in formation...

autons are actually somewhat more useful because they will stick with you while still swiveling to hit targets around you and because they can be left in another system.
