I was thinking (and posting) about how the new Mammoth shields are good for fighting 0.97 bases, but weak against large groups of fighters because of their low recharge rate. I was considering a strategy where I carry both kinds, one for general use and one for attacking bases, when I thought of an idea for a new item.

Have a shield that allows you to switch between high HP/slow recharge and low HP/faster recharge. For balance you would not want this to be something you could do in the middle of a fight, so I propose you would make it so you have to turn off the shield, and then charge it back up. You could even do this without requiring a new menu by making the game alternate - if the last time you activated the shield it was in fast recharge mode, this time it will start in slow recharge mode, and vice-versa.

Of course, this shield should be more expensive and power-draining than if the player were to buy one shield of each type and use a drydock to switch them out.

That sound's a little complicated codewise to me, but that idea is pretty good!

As a further temperance on its power, how about enhancements like ion reflection or whatever only apply to *one* mode?

You are all illogical.
You will be assimulated.
Resistance is futile.

Nah, I don't like modding a game until I've fully mastered the "vanilla" version, and I still haven't beaten this one yet.

I found out about the Jotun shield after making this post, it's pretty similar to what I was talking about though the recharge rate seems to go up as you crank it up. At least I know there will be no technical difficulties preventing the creation of a big-slow/little-fast shield.
