How does the game convert various different shapes of those big ships, into appropriate armor segments which are defined only by angle span?
For example, ranx dreadnought has 24 armor segments, each spanning 15 degrees. One would think dreadnought has a perfect circular shape anyway, which part of the dreadnought is the 'start 0, span 15' segment? Is it somewhere on the front? aft, starboard? Which of them?
(Excuse my ignorance if this question was already asked)

0 degrees is the front. Angular rotation is clockwise. So,
the segment, start=0 span=15, begins at the front (between the forward facing spikes of a dreadnought) and covers a 15 degree clockwise arc from there.

So the dreadnought is vulnerable only at the front, some 120 degrees (60 clockwise, 60 counterclockwise) except 15-30 on both sides, I guess it's because of those spikes?dvlenk6 wrote:0 degrees is the front. Angular rotation is clockwise. So,

I always hit them on the side of the engine at the back. It's the easiest place to focus fire. I've never had problems with failing to kill when the armor goes down, but I mainly use WMDs on all capships and WMDs have a higher chance to kill when a noncritical segment drops.

most capships lack shields- *hint hint* *cough*CSC Antarctica*cough*
EMP cannon and/or some dwarg chasing you around are nifty to have if a ranx dreadnought or such comes lurking around...

I don't like EMP. EMPed ships spin and spinning ships don't let you focus your fire. I don't want to spend all day wearing down the armor of a capships.
They all have vulnerabilities that you can exploit unless you're in a freighter. Ares capships are phenomenally vulnerable to Katanas and to a lesser degree howitzers at range where you can dodge effectively. Ranx do next to no damage within the safety range of the kiloton. Everything else is vulnerable to sniping except maybe the Aquillas and they only show for one mission where they're busy firing on someone else.
