I was working on a mod when in one of my tests find a fleet of xenophobe destroyers on the opening screen. So I said "This ought to be good," and watched.
It was well worth it. The next serious ship to come into play was a Xenophobe worldship. It destroyed the destroyers with ease. I kept watching, wanting to see what would take on a worldship. Among the countless wreaks of weaker craft, the worldship destroyed: A ranx Dreadnought, A CSC (I pressed 'N' for this one, knowing that it would win without damage, so this one is arguable), A fleet of sandstorms (normally weakish craft, but with particle resistance and a weapon that can actually touch the worldship I decided to put them in this list), a Gaian demolition ship, a fleet of Centurion Xs or two, a Dragon Slaver, and two fleets of corp cruisers. It was finally destroyed by a large fleet of centurion Xs. These were themselves promptly destroyed by a fleet (!?!) of Dragon Slavers.
How about have each "winner" ship be challenged by ships of increasing difficulty (starting at a hornet battlepod and then randomly choosing more difficult opponents/fleets)? This would decrease the rediculous amount of times I had to press "n" to escape the bordom of mules (yes, a fleet of mule autons attacked the Xenophobe worldship) and other extremely weak craft.
The opening screen
I'd like the opening screen to generate statistics. It would be a good way to balance AI ships. If some new ship only ever dies to Ares, Ranx, specials, and impossible groups (eg 20 earth slavers) you know it's too powerful for the early or mid game unless it has some weakness (like the Ferrians' nonagressive AI)

I miss the sheer terror that Xenophobes used to inspire.
They used to be just about the worst thing you could encounter; and of course they roam around, which made it all that much worse.
It seems like now everything else has gotten more powerful; while the xenophobes have remained about the same.

They are always dead by the time I encounter them...dvlenk6 wrote:I miss the sheer terror that Xenophobes used to inspire.

I think the problems are twofold. One, they do stupid stuff. The defenders and worldships have howitzers. They should hang back and use it. The Fighters should hang back and guard the defenders and worldships. Two, bases have gotten a lot more powerful.
