I know that the idea of docking with planets has been thrown around a bit, but what if you could just get closer to them?
Say that you approach a Saturn-like planet, and you press a designated key. The planet graphic will get much bigger, and the rings will act the same as asteroid belts around stars; you can mine from them, etc. There could even be vessels that approach the gas giant in specialized ships to collect gases like He3 and oxygen.
If you were to approach a rocky planet, there could be colonies on the surface you can access via space elevator (It's the future, okay?).
It's really just a thought.

Actually,
In theory, it's possible to fake this... simply turn the planet into a gate, and "gate" into a special "system" for that planet. You can't do this randomly, at least, if you could, it would be incredibly difficult.
The speeds WOULD NOT match up, but uhh... maybe gravity messes it up? ^^

That's actually pretty close to what I had in mind.Wolfy wrote:Actually,

As for speeds, the ship could still travel at the same speed it does in the main system, it would just take longer to go across the planet. Since the planets are far in the background already, (or at least, that's what I'm assuming, due to there being ships larger than planets) it shouldn't make much difference.

oh, and as for speeds: we can just say it's running in say... half time or something... ^^ (I think normal time is 30x faster than natural?)Xephyr wrote:That's actually pretty close to what I had in mind.Wolfy wrote:Actually,

I think I'll try to make a proof of concept mod to test this out...
I'll post here when it's done.

GL! I'm curious as to see how you'll represent the stations near to the planet...

Actually it would be pretty cool if you just took all the stations at carriers off the main map and put them on planetary-zoom maps. I guarantee nobody will care about ship speeds or weapon decay since, face it, the physics in this game make NO sense anyway. Its designed for fun, not realism.
Of course, having the game work this way would put a dent in planet-to-planet escort missions, but...
My question is, how do you escape the planetary-zoom map and get back to the system map?

Sounds good enough for me!Aeonic wrote:I guarantee nobody will care about ship speeds or weapon decay since, face it, the physics in this game make NO sense anyway. Its designed for fun, not realism.

XD
anyways, you could create sort of a pseudo gate event: when the player leaves a certain boundary (perhaps a plain orbit line or something?) they auto-gate out...

I'm just not that great at XML coding... I rendered an image of Saturn without its rings, then I managed to replace the sun with that, but then I tried to add the rings via asteroid belt and the game crashed.
This might take a while, so don't get too excited.

it could be that you added too many asteroids.I tried to add the rings via asteroid belt and the game crashed.
Please check also the distance of the asteroids from the center of the system, too large systems seems to crash the game too.
