It was just one way to win the lottery. Lucky drops can be just as good ... and if there's no orthosteel, you still waste a couple of minutes knocking on all the asteroids.
Okay, in rc3, how do you get the quest to kill Arco Vaughan before he blows you away?
It seems that somehow we're supposed to prove ourselves to the Raisu station before they will tell you to kill Arco Vaughan, but if you kill enough Centauri Raiders without having a mission telling you to kill a specific group, he will come after you across the star system, before you get the mission to kill him.
If that happens, and you're near Starton Eridani, they will kill him for you, but you don't get either the mission or the missiles from Raisu station, nor do you get credit for his death.
If you;'re not near Starton Eridani, all you get is dead, regardless of where in the system you are.

But the problem is that the orthosteel made mining overly important.

What are the globals in onRandomEncounter? Is there a list of ships that was created by the random spawn? Or am I misunderstanding the event by thinking it is called when random encounters are spawned?

I guess this means no more lucky starts by finding some orthosteel ore in the metallic asteroids in Eridiani.

You're no more forced to mine because you MIGHT get something good out of it than you are forced to destroy every station in the game because they MIGHT leave some good loot behind. This game is all about mights, regardless of what you choose to do.
On the other hand, if you remove the mights from something so that now there is no chance that you'll get anything good out of it, no player is going to waste their time doing that when they can do something that MIGHT give them something good.
Last Cause Of Death: Destroyed by Karl Svalbard's last Lucifer missile, right after I blew him up. And the crowd cheers.
as atarlost put it, its better to have mining at all then op mining; what has been done is just a step in the right direction; mining was a mandatory grind before, high yield, high grind. mining should NOT be a playstyle all in its own, but rather a small, fast return, high yield of low grade ores, thus low money yield activiy

Mining very well could be made into a playstyle of its own with the addition of some interesting missions and mechanics, especially toward the later levels. This update has just relegated mining into the category of "something not worth doing at all." You need two dedicated device slots (mining weapon + hold) and stand to gain very little; certainly not enough to pay off your initial investment in a reasonable time frame. It's just not worth doing any more.
but missions ARE NOT in themselves mining; they might be mknkng related and all... but sitting around, shooting rocks for hours on end is not in any way comprehendably fun nor valid as a balanced playstle in itself.
if i wanted to be bored doing mind numbing tasks, id get a boring job; not play a game. the point of a game is to have fun; if mining as shooting rocks all day was fun, then you'd spend all day having a great time filing paperwork.

What you find fun might not be what others find fun. I like trading myself but I realize that others might find that boring. Killing and looting stations is fun to alot but not as fun to me.
