I'm wondering... I play using the keyboard arrows (not hjkl) and invoke commands and such using my left hand.

The down arrow key thrusts in exactly the same way as the up key, while the nearest thing we have to "slow down" is '.' (period). I would like to politely request that the down arrow key slow the ship down just like '.' instead of thrusting the ship forward. In my opinion, it would make mining and positioning far easier.

The change should take maybe 30 seconds to implement. Anyone with me on this one? Or is there something I'm missing?

I'm with you.

We can do that with keyboard re-mappers, but then dockscreen navigation is messed up, I'm lucky my keyboard has PgUp right next to the arrows, so I use that. Down arrow seems to me like the most logical place for "stop".

Yes. Please. Seriously, the "." stopping the ship is the most annoying part of Transcendence BY FAR for me.
I always have to take my left hand away from the left side of the keyboard and place it on the "."-key just so I can mine effectively. And then I have to move it back all over the keyboard to the "A"-key so I can fire fast at those reluctant roids.

I would like to re-iterate my request for this key remapping, or a reason why not, before 1.0 happens. Trying mining again in RC7, I keep thinking of this every time...

I agree, although it isnt such a problem for me since I have an autohotkey script to remap 'ins' to '.' (Ins works well since its on the numpad I use for flight control and not used for anything else)

I agree that this would be a really nice change to the controls and makes a lot more sense than the current '.' setup.

I remember when the "." = stop-the-ship was implemented. It's nice to have this feature, but I am curious why "." was chosen over any other keys.

I think jkl also moves the ship, "." is right next to those, which might explain it.

Even for jkl '.' is a poor choice. On qwerty keyboards it's off to the side. 'm' and ',' are below. 'm' is used for map, but I have no clue why ',' wasn't chosen for stop.

I use jkl, and I find my little finger is always resting nicely on the '.' key. Perhaps hand size has something to do with that?

Could be. I hit '.' with my ring finger, which in the jkl set is used for turning. It would be far better to hit ',' with my middle finger which is used for thrust, something I'm not going to want to do at the same time as I'm not going to want to do at the same time as I stop.

I have large hands though and can't hold them straight on a normal sized keyboard without amputating my thumbs.

This is why we desperately need keymapping.

When positioning, I hold down the drag key while thrusting. I use arrow keys, so holding the down-arrow while positioning would require the uncomfortable use of my thumb.

Hijack: why do you stop? I usually only stop the ship to do someting cheap and/or boring, like grind a base or hide behind/atop a wreck or planet.

Why not allow both '.' and down-arrow to be used to stop? We have multiple keys for thrust and turning. It makes sense for their to be multiple keys for braking also.

That's exactly what I meant! I apologise if I did not make myself clear at the outset. I merely propose changing the down arrow key from "thrust" to "stop". Nothing more. The hjkl players can keep doing their magic, no objections from me.

As for why I "stop": when mining, matching speed of ship with firing rate of weapon whilst facing an arbitrary direction; when escorting ships, matching their speed; when dealing with overpowering enemies (e.g. ferian warriors early on) letting them get a *bit* closer while maintaining aim at them (I find thrusting is prone to changing my direction of travel); flying towards an enemy base while firing but stopping before I fly into it (think penitent shrines).
