i would think if it is "life insurance" it should cover lost orders

I always wondered about that too. I actually ended up being my own insurance by waiting at the nearest gate and escorting the next freighter that comes through to the trading post. That always seems to work, and often even if the freighter does get destroyed your order is still on the wreck!
EDIT:
Maybe there should be two options: one would be to pay an extra fee (about 5-10% of the price of your order) for a Korvlov escort to escort the freighter, and another one to put the freighter in your ships computer so you can escort it yourself.
