I've been looking at the Recommended Mods page on the wiki. As well as the relevant forum thread.

The wiki page (as it, itself states) needs a lot of work done on it to be useful. I would like to use this thread to
a) Collect people's recommendations.
b) Discuss recommended mods.
c) Discuss what should be on the Recommended Mods page (and what format it should be in).

I don't want lots of mods listed with no explanations so I'm going to suggest that (for now) everybody limit themselves to one mod and give a good description of what it does, what's good about it and anything of technical interest about it.

You should also be free to say why you don't think one of the suggested mods should be included on the page. As long as you do so politely!

Remember that the mods should work well in the latest version of Transcendence. I think you should be allowed to suggest one of your own mods, if you want (but you should probably mention that fact ;-)

If your favourite mod has already been recommended, why not add your quote saying what you like about it?

I was thinking of having a format a bit like this. (And this also doubles as my recommendation).

Code: Select all

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Scuttle Wrecks, by Bobby Recommended by ptbptb
+---------------------+-----------------+----------------------------------+
| Initially for 0.98d (runs under 1.01) | 2008 Feb 22 (2009 Jul 2) |
+---------------------+-----------------+----------------------------------+
This allows you to blow up any ship wreck you dock to. Just press 's'
when docked and watch it go kabloom! It works with an area effect
weapon to allow it to destroy wrecks on planets and stars (for safety
reasons wrecks are simply deleted if another ship or station is nearby).
+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
* ptbptb says, "I find it very satisfying to blow up wrecks and, from a practical viewpoint, it stops me chasing down little dark green dots that I've already looted."

I don't think a single recommendation works. It will give a very narrow list with only the top mods, not all the good mods.

Every single modder, for instance, will probably nominate Godmod or DSF or Periculi's topology accelerator or something of that nature. Or something of their own which may be selected based on their feeling of its cleverness rather than how it effects gameplay.

What I'd do is subpaginate and let people nominate multiple mods and assemble the final list from those.

There's also two reasons to nominate a mod. It is either good for gameplay or of interest primarily to other modders.

Godmod and all frameworks are obviously in the second category. Most of my stuff is arguably glorified code examples as well, though I have tried for balance except in the command detonated mine/missile pod example.

Digdug's WE3 on the other hand is just a fun mod to play with. The coding is skillfully done, but not exactly a useful example for other people.

At the very least nominations should be split into those categories.

I don't intend to keep it to a single recommendation, but I thought that would be a good way of focussing people's minds and making them think hard about their decisions. The present wiki page has every single mod (as of May 2009) in the list with no details at all. I want a much shorter, more informative, set of entries.

Maybe, but once _one_ person has nominated a mod that leaves everybody else having to choose something else.
