Just some brainstorming (Admittedly more for modders, though of course george can take what he thinks is neat from this thread :wink: )

So anyways, what sorts of ships and ship roles would you think transcendence's universe could see?

And I'm not talking about eastereggs or godmod level ships that are thrown in there for fun, I mean ships that fit in with its lore and beleivability.

I'll post my list later, given its length (some of the ships are from TX2, some are planned for TX2)

Personally, I'd like to see Corporate Explorers (and a few other ahips) carry shuttles....which would make heretic both look better and work a little better (how the heck did that centurion GET to the Huygens?). I know this isn't directly related, but it's similar. Ish. :P


(And didn't some fleet officer in a bar mention that the Ares targeted the escape pods on the CSC Europa? Those might be interesting to script in....when a CSC is damaged beyond X, it starts deploying escape pods..... )


I'd also like to see some more existing ships turned into other varients...... ships like the EI100M..frieighters with bigger weapons and/or missiles, but still not that well armored (compared to a proper capital ship or gun/missileship (like, a modified Scarab or Aurochs would not be better armored than a Britannia all over. It might be at the FRONT.....but not all over. They'd still HAVE adequate armor, though.)...Aurochs gunship with a hanzo and/or makayev, anyone?

How about cruise-ships. Big, bloated, and full of tourists. Other types of vessels that have no value, but instead just add to atmosphere. An occasional escape pod on its way to safety. Towing vessels that drag wrecks to a single junk heap. Scientific vessels doing research.
Vessels that are unlike most of the ones currently in the game. They don't travel from a gate to a station and then back to a gate, but rather roam around doing their jobs. Some of them could even be large autons, like a towing auton to grab wrecks and bring them somewhere.
Just a thought......

oh yeah
waste disposal barges
haul waste from stations out to a star or edge of the system and dispose of it safely (dumping it in the system could be like being hit by a whole lot of (potentially toxic) Pk25 morningstar particle clouds)
Specifically designed, as opposed to a frighter, which is likely not meant to be carrying hazardous materials (look what radioactive leaky things do to your hull!)

Escape pods will be necessary when ship changing is here. More civilian craft in general would be excellent, some light shuttle craft for workers to get to their work, some luxury craft for the rich, maybe something like an RV, that is designed as a mobile home. Maybe some really fast ships that are backed by sponsors to race around Rigel Aurelius for prizes?

More medium class ships are needed for the CW. They have the CSCs, the aquila's make a brief appearance and everything else is a fighter, gunship or missileship. There's nothing that parallels the drake, tripoli or raid platforms. Only the freighters exist in that size range.

I'd like to see a large strike craft with some serious stealth. Something akin to a RL submarine. Designed to operate independantly and make a strong surprise attack against a larger ship from a distance.

A ship like that could cause a lot of havoc!!!!

I like the idea. It would need a projectile with a long range that would maneuver itself in a way as to mask the ship's position and appear as though the weapon was fired from a different location.

In theory, you could do this with my Mines & Missiles Mod (when it's finished)....using stealth armor and tracking torpedos (although the trackers are NOT designed to be strong against capships...you have the M2 and M5 for that....my trackers are designed for long range attacks beyond LRS range, and for plinking swarms of gunships)

But stealthed missile-ships carrying tracking torpedoes would be great. :D

Rasiermesser launcher and Gotha 400 seeker. It has the longest range of any non-Iocrym tracking weapon in the game I think.

Gothas make for a great long range missileship. The other option is a slight mod to the NAMI missiles giving them a tiny degree of stealth..so they DO appear on your screen, but only within, say.....70 lighseconds. That means there's a chance to work back, but a decent chance for the stealthship as well.

How about throwing in some mobile suits or space mechas for more ship variations.. Won't hurt, you know..

Yes it will. Space mecha are quite possibly the stupidest from a spacecraft can possibly take. Large moveable bits are a maintenance nightmare and massive waste of tonnage that do absolutely nothing to benefit a spaceship qua spaceship.

Mobile suits are simply too small to carry enough reaction mass to be viable for anything except shipyard work, where they would be invisible.

I'm of Atarlost's opinion; mobile suits would be ridiculously tiny and short range so as to be pointless liabilities, and space mechas don't make sense. Especially in the transcendence universe.

And escape pods would be so much larger? I am unsure how that would work unless you use the cenari carrot ships for a 'escape pod'

Yes, escape pods would be larger. They would have to be. An escape pod needs either interplanetary range or very long life support endurance. Neither is possible in a suit. A hornet is 5 tons dry. An escape pod can't be much smaller. A "suit" that big is no longer a suit in the traditional sense and is stupid for all the reasons space mechas are stupid.

Eh... I don't mean to disagree, but would you people consider 18.3 m for height and 57.2 tons for mass to be tiny? That's the stats for Exia mobile suit according to the Gundam designers.
I think they may be pretty useful for space constructions, mining, escorts and short to mid range combats (depending on the weapon loadouts).
