In "reality", how do our ship get the name of the targetted ships? Provided by them or from our own ship's database? If the former, my guess is the captain of that freighter was intoxicated with something from the BM. Haha..

Ship class is likely from a database; one that can be updated at any nearby station; ship names are likely from the friend/foe identification transponder

On topic:
I'd imagine that there would be an IFF transponder on each freighter.....the codes to make it identify would change fairly often though, so pirates can't use the system to find prey.

IFF would be more to say "don't shoot me!" as opposed to "shoot me!"

I just installed the new Screen-saver and tried it out. It started with a group of freighters (50+ of them) vs Centurions (5 of them). The freighters got crushed horribly (mostly because they didn't fire any weapons) and the best part was that the last freighter left was Nnrnuracc !!!
I just thought it funny.

The entire body of written word is not yet searchable by internet search engine. It could be the name of a spaceship from a SF story he liked, one that's only online record is the title in a bibliography on a Wikipedia stub.
