Oh what I meant was:
Regular stars can be shot partially through
Red stars cannot
It has to do with the bitmask each of them use.

Indeed. A rule of thumb I use: If it's spiky, it can probably be shot through.

(Another example of this is Tan Ru Dorem)

That's the star I was sitting on top of when the plague gunships got me.

In the previous system, Rigel iirc, is a big spikey yellow star. I was curious, so I headed over there and opened fire on it to see if any of my fire would go thru and all of it, from various angles, would get caught in the spikey edge of the yellow star. In my experience, enemy ships always had the same result. I could sit powered down in the "middle" of that type of star, and be completely safe.

With the small red star from the screenshot, there isn't that spikey edge, so enemy fire can get quite a bit closer to me while sitting on top/right in the middle of the star.

I suppose this brings us back to the gas cloud attack they were using, somehow it was able to penetrate this small red star. I don't know if I was a bit close to the edge and/or if that type of attack is AOE-ish, and enough of it got thru to affect me or what the cause was. I suppose it could have been that the gunship fired its weapon inside the edge of the red star and that's what did it.

Sorry for beating a dead horse folks, I DO appreciate all the help and advice. I'm sure there is a reasonable answer, I just like to know how stuff works. :D

yeah, there is a region of the red stars that can be penetrated, however unlike the spikey stars, the region is a constant radius around it. You would need to be sitting in the very middle of the star. Even then, radius & area attacks can still get you, and even worse if they deal momentum, which would cause you to be bumped off the star.

I got to the Charon system earlier today. I was flying a Sapphire yacht with a Nova-25 reactor, a Yoroi S100 Generator and a Biolide Laser Array that had its damage rating increased by 75% via a Laser Collinator.

The first thing I did was to get as far away from Korolov Shipping as possible and let the firefight there sort itself out. The next thing I did was to find the St. Katherine's Star stargate. By luck, I also found an auton dealer nearby. On the few occasions where the Charon Pirates send their missile boats at me, I parked myself on top of the auton dealer and let its defensive fighters sort everything out before looting the wrecks. The dealer had a Heavy IAV and two Ronin gunships that made short work of everything the pirates threw at them. Whenever one of the Ronin were destroyed, a new one comes in from St Katherine's Star.

I only returned to Korolov Shipping once I knew where the next jumpgate was. From that point on, I took on one stronghold at a time, looting as much as I can and selling the spoils at the Arcology of New Victoria. Borrowing a leaf from Azar Wolf's book, I stored everything that I couldn't sell into cargo containers stashed on planets on both systems for retrieval later.

I'm now in the process of selling off everything that I couldn't sell to New Victoria. My ship configuration has remained unchanged, with only the addition of a fast-fire NAMI Missile Launcher, utilising the hundreds of missiles that I've looted from the Charon Pirates.

I think the real trouble begins once you get beyond St. Katherine's Star, because I barely managed to take down a Pirate Frigate in the next system. This is why I'm now selling off everything that I don't use or need. This includes the Longbow missiles, because I can't hit anything with them. I'm trying to amass enough credits to buy a better weapon (I still have no idea what's better). So far, I only have about 41 000.

Upgrade to something other than laser. (check the F1 menu to see all the damage types, in order I believe) Heavy plasteel armor, for example, resists laser and kinetic by +300%, but particle and blast by only +25% (meaning laser damage is ~1/4thed against it). as armor level goes up, so does resistance, especially for lower damage types. Particle and blast are better than laser and kinetic, and ion and thermo are better still.

The Shuriken and Lancer are probably the best particle weapons you can find. I've used both to good effect. I'm just starting out in Charon with an +10% Shuriken and a +fast Flenser. I've got a Ceratops 1T for shields and heavy ceralloy with laser reflect on all panels. I have a NAMI with a bunch of Longbows, Starbursts, and Stilettos.

Shuriken's actually the worst of its tier. Dual particle puts out better damage at better range. Lancer puts out better damage at far better range, but with more roundoff loss.

NAMI Heavy Launcher.

Which does have a lot of potential which i was working to exploit, before I decided to learn balance and some more coding BEFORE doing a large rewrite of weapons.

When had they been nerfed?

Must've been because of the aquilas in the antarctica mission?
