I kept a spreadsheet with System logs for each game. It's useful to keep track of which character is where and what stations are in each system (for buying/selling/hunting), where the stashes are when backtracking, where I've mined already etc...
Plus, it helps pass the time while solar cells recharge
and over time you get an idea which system spawns which stations (without snooping in the XMLs).
