In version 1.02 I once had a random encounter with some Sapiens plague ships while surrounded by two Ferian colonies. Long story short, a lot of the miners died from radiation.
This and the bug-spray nature of the Actinide waste cannon gave me the idea how to be a complete rogue and get the Ferian cargo without incurring relation penalties.
Flying around their base and tagging each miner with just one shot gets them all killed (in a while) and your F2 stats show no kills nor do the freshly hatched miners get hostile - as long as you avoid hitting the hive.
I even got a Ventari destroyer to follow me to the hive and destroy it with stray shots so I can Domina-power-kill the Warriors for their Plasmas (after the miners were extinct), without being the target of their wrath.
End result: lots of ore and gas and plasma, no hostility, just the Warriors listed as kills.
This seems to me like a game exploit. I think there should be some mechanic to monitor the cause of death for civvies so the radiation kills caused by the player also count. Especially since Ferians attacked Sapiens upon subsequent raids, but I got away free to repeat the same at other colonies.
Ferian miners exploited (SPOILER)

OMG!
That is Genius! I'm so exploiting this while I can.

Though yes, it is a bug.

First rule of the Ferian Miner Exploit: You do not talk about the Ferian Miner Exploit
Second rule of the Ferian Miner Exploit: ....
This seems like a bug with the actinide, unless I am reading it wrong?

No, its a bug with the radiation effect; XM300's will cause it as well.

Now that I think of it, I firstfound this bug when I used it to kill Antarctica and I did not get credit for the kill.

Definitely a bug (or rather, missing code).
It would be interesting to have the Ferians react differently to radiation. Some ideas:
a. If more than a couple of miners are irradiated, all remaining ones go back to the colony and warriors are spawned.
b. Irradiated miners are killed by other miners and looted.
c. Irradiated miners go back to the colony and decontaminate.
Any other ideas?

I like the idea of b. It seems very hive mind like. As long as it does not result in contamination of the ship that docks, leading to a chain reaction. Perhaps they should just be able to kill them, and then destroy them?george moromisato wrote: b. Irradiated miners are killed by other miners and looted.
I deffinitely like option B the best. I've seen ants perform this very behavior when one of their workers is hurt in some way. They just rip them apart and take the pieces back to the nest.
So next time you step on an ant... make sure you finish the job, eh?

Yeah, I would go with option b; though how would they themselves avoid being contaminated?

I like option C. Yes, ants do option B, but this hive mind is more intelligent than ants and would of course come to a smarter, energy saving method (killing one miner to loot it wastes the resources required to produce a miner and the energy expenditure to scuttle and loot). Decontaminating a miner takes less energy and resources.
But, being that they are a hive mind, any attack should produce a response from the hive, and irradiating miners would constitute an aggressive act and require a response. Even if the initial aggressive response is aimed at the wrong target.
BTW, are ferians intelligent, semi-intelligent, or what?

For Sale: One slightly used EI500 freighter. Hull damaged, primary weapon defective, shields inoperable. Must be towed to Dry-dock. Make an offer!!
Send the warriors out to kill the irradiated drones. They're rad immune anyways and then they're already out to prevent/deter the exploit from being used.

IceMephit:
That's a good point actually. Maybe the warriors should even come out at times in which they're not really needed. Imagine one of the workers gets hit by a stray missile shot accidentally. Maybe the workers would retreat from that area and the warriors would come out all brazen and bold, only to retreat back to the hive when it is clear there is no threat.
But the thing about Ferian Workers is they're cheap. They have little armor, crap weapons... all they're good for is mining and hauling small bits of ore. They are, ultimately, expendable. If destroying one of them would be for the benefit of the hive (as this exploit proves can sometimes be the case), I would think they would be summarily destroyed, scuttled, and their parts (both organic and mineral) would be recycled.
For the good of the hive.
Since the Workers are so completely retarded and useless for anything but swarm-mining, they would probably not be the ones to destroy the damaged Ferian. The Warriors would fill that niche, and as Prophet points out, they are already rad-immune.
Ferians aren't really very intelligent, at least, not the worker caste. They've basically devolved into animals and are used as labor. So destroying a worker or warrior wouldn't even be a blip on the conscience of the hive. The "Queen", if there is one, is going to be the biggest and possibly sole intelligence... and is probably mostly computer based.
There are probably more kinds of Ferrian who live in the Hive areas. Loaders, Smelters, Breeders... all kinds. But they're all only interested in one thing.
The good of the Hive.
