At the suggestion of someone on IRC, I completed a game without upgrading my armor or shield. Final equipment:
light plasteel + laser +kinetic
hull plate ionizer + 50%
longreach autocannon
koshiba 500 +enhanced

And volkov in tow. I couldn't have done it without him.

I think the fact that there's these different combination is amazing, worst possible to make to the core is indeed a good idea though it would let new players skim by without trying to achieve the very best. (yes I'm thinking of the pokemon song
)

I always had great fun playing as an enemy of the Commonwealth. I would start out with the freighter for its cargo capacity, and destroy a station as soon as I could. If I were to dock with a commonwealth station, I would be arrested, and thus game over. However, Tinkers and the like are okay to dock with, as well as BM stations if you can find an ID in a transport.
Overall, it isn't TOO hard, unless you provoke the Corporate Cruisers, but it is still difficult considering that you don't have the easy services you are used to.

Nice! Seeing a score of battlepods or wind slavers would be probably be pretty tense in that outfit.

Absolute worst is probably ultra light titanium and any one of the level I shields. Downgrading would seem kinda odd though.
I've been trying this in an EI500, but I'm about ready to give up. I just can't dodge properly in it. I'm going to try sapphire though.
I've done enemy of the commonwealth, but it seems cheap. The game just isn't programmed to handle the player doing this very well.
Hornets weren't a problem: Even unenhanced the wolfen's defenses can handle those just fine, and I used centauri nanos. Wind slavers on the other hand.... That's one of the big reasons volkov is important. He can take some fire for you (more than you can take for yourself), and kill stuff while you concentrate on dodging. M1s are also helpful for drawing fire.
