I've been selling and buying slave coffins in 1.02 in an attempt to get Black market XP (now I know it only works for their goods).
Anyway, afterwards I wanted to free them - none were sold permanently, and it was all within one docking stay - and got to the fortress.
First they tried me and fined me for slavery - then I got the "wow, you freed the slaves" speech, commended for my services and all that was missing was for some grateful freed slave to give me a present (there were less than 24).
I couldn't find if this was reported before, but for 1.04+ I suggest the Commonwealth should confiscate and release any slaves the player has in his hold when that player is arrested. Not commend him for weaseling out of the trial with them.
[bug] The popular slaver
I don't know, if this eventuality were better handled, it could work alright.
Like if you were given an option, being a slaver AND having slaves in your hold, what you wanted to do with them. You could try to sneak around the station, or you could release them. If you released them, maybe the commonwealth would commend you for "changing your ways"

It wasn't my intention to profit from slave trade (there's no profit in it, BTW - I'd get more from selling damaged Shurikens and Particle cannons).
My point was that since the game already has the option of you being arrested and tried for slavery - then, no matter the outcome of the trial, any slaves still in your hold should immediately be confiscated from your inventory (do not pass go, no brownie points for you) regardless of the Smuggler's cargo hold.
It's more for the sake of consistency (like contraband confiscation) than gameplay, as it's a very special circumstance I won't be repeating intentionally.
BTW, smuggler's hold doesn't stop you or the Commonwealth stations from liberating the slaves in your cargo, but a choice would be nice.

Do you have an account on the issue tracker? I would suggest posting it on there and referencing this thread in that ticket. I agree that this behaviour is inconsistent, so it would make sense to fix. The best place for such issues is on trac
