Yea, device-protect+EMP-immune armor is great. Try worldship armor plate.
The only other way I can think of before Heretic is Domina powers.

There are several armors that provide ion effect immunity. There is also an armor coating.

quadro/hexa/octo-carbide all give ion effect immunity :)

Toward the end of my game i had plasma shield generator+90% and a plasma cannon. I had no problem killing them.
I really don't care if I get my hair cut... *snip* NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
