Can there be some item that identifys barrels? I know a few tricks...but can there be an item? I don't really want to waste my cash installing light titanium or the such. The only trick i know without using it is: If you found it in a ...well...those radiation guy's citedel... then any barrel you find there is radiation.

Here's another tip,

The barrels sold by Armor Dealers are never dangerous.

that tactic is much more work than buying some cheap armor and applying it on that. I don't do this if I have light blast plate or sometimes ceralloy, its easy stuff to obtain.

I've been told that technique is called 'Save Scumming'.

What's a few credits gonna hurt you? I always keep a seg of light titanium in the hold for testing. When I get several different unknown barrels I'll have the armor installed then test all the unknowns in one shot.

But my play style, I have a particular armor that I always look for in every game...Dwarg Holochroal Armor. Once I find 4 segs I'll have 'em installed for the remainder of the game and only intall 1 seg of light titanium if I need to test some unknowns.
So I'm looking at 50 credits to install the titanium and when I'm finished testing, the Holochroal gets reinstalled and that costs what, 400 credits? If one of the unknowns is rad, that's 250 credits to dock and decon unless I know I have the decon gel barrel. So overall it costs me 450 credits to test barrels or 700 if I have to dock for decon.
Well worth it in my book to solve for the unknowns.

For me:
Killing the game process to save money and avoid a 'bad scenario' would disrupt the game balance and take much of the enjoyment out of playing Transcendence.

A large part of the enjoyment of playing Transcendence comes from the 'roguesque' aspects of it.
If you lose 100,000 credits, shrug, don't worry, you might find a million somewhere else.
If you die, shrug, start a new game (I never resurrect either). I was killed several times in Heretic because I pressed the wrong key on the keyboard, before I ever finished the game and didn't even resurrect in those circumstances. That's the breaks, and why Transcendence will continue to be enjoyable to play, even after you have examined the .xml and know exactly how and what everything in the game does.

I still find a lot of enjoyment when I come across a system with some Tempus Labs and a CW station, or a couple Ice Farms and a Hotel. Another example further on in the game would be a Ringers Collective sitting near a Ferian colony spawning miners. Got Rins.

Philisophical reasons, I suppose.
I don't feel that I accomplished much if I go through w/ resurrections. Die, so what, resurrect, die again, so what...
Going through without resurrecting or using mods to amplify your ship's power is difficult. I feel very happy :P when I am able to finish the game without dying, which isn't very often.

I only play the game for fun. So anything that makes it more fun for me is good.
If you don't agree, then you should play the game however you get the most enjoyment out of it.
That's one reason I think the modifiability of the game is so cool.

I also get a lot of enjoyment in playing the game unmodded and beating it. Although I've only beat the game once without any mods. Died a billion deaths and only a couple handfulls of resurrections. Normally whenever I die I'll start a new game but there have been times where my curiosity got the best of me and I'd resurrect to find out the results...and not making the same mistake again.

But I do like using mods as well, and can get a lot of enjoyment that way too.
The funny thing about it with me, I'll play an unmod game and somewhere down the line I'd wished I had a particular mod to help me get out of a jam. Then there's times when I use mods and start to feel like I'm at an advantage. Usually whenever I feel this way in either case, I'll quit the game and remove the Extensions folder or swap it with another one and start a new game. I keep several Extensions folders with each having different mods in them for an additional variety of different game plays.

I generally take my chances with the barrels and I havent had any great losses.

I think the only situation being earlier in the game when I had just purchased a shiny new Akan 600 Turret with the bulk of my credits only to have some industrial solvent dissolve it. But oh well ^^, easy come easy go.

And on the topic of resurrections, way back when I first started playing, I didnt realize you could resurrect.
