Interesting.

One question though, is there backstory for the various factions in the game?

Like the Dwarg, or the Urak, or the Sapiens?

Yes and no. There is a stickied post over on the UTF that addresses that.

That sticky hasn't been updated for quite a while, though. The latest update was to add the Ranx, and AFAICR it only says it's a military dictatorship of some kind.

Hey George, could you perhaps make a new, updated sticky for the OTF? 'Twould be seriously awesome :D

Or the UTF. I go on more on the UTF. But the OTF noneless would be fine.

Well, I think the new guide should go up on the Transc site.

Ah, Trans-Humans, Neo-Humans, Post-humans...

I've been wondering about this and this is as good a topic as any to ask...

Why does the game have so many pseudo-human races rather then aliens? Not that there's anything wrong with it... it's just different and unexpected.

EDIT: I know the background on the new human subraces is discussed here:

...but it doesn't explain the lack of aliens.

Why? Cause the aliens...esp the iocrym blocked our gate to the aliens. THis is just normal humans, some has evolved, some are pirates.

Oh that's BS! They can't put a shield around the entire galaxy. That would require infinitely more then 1.21 gigawatts of power. And shutting down stargates ain't gonna stop aliens with translight technology from getting in.

EDIT: Ah, found the explanation.... at the end of the Timeline:

http://z8.invisionfree.com/Transcendenc ... wtopic=171
The Iocrym had visited the Solar System more than 250 million years ago and when they detected complex, multi-cellular life on Earth, they shut down all the stargates in the region and designated the whole area as a "nature preserve"
Ah, but that's not gonna stop some nefarious/curious/thrill-seeking aliens from sneaking in anyway. It would be cool to see other alien races come in... maybe as traders, maybe as scientists, maybe as exiles. The Iocrym's "nature preserve" (and implied guardianship over it) would make them rare, but not impossible to find.

Maybe aliens do come, their just invisible and watch us like a zoo...with the rule: Don't disturb the animals...and "don't feed animals.

Hey, that's a good idea... like Star Trek scientists and their observation posts on certain planets. Hmmm, If that's true then at some point we should to be able to look "behind the curtain" and discover the existence and nature of our silent observers.

Then it's the old "alien first encounter" scenario... do we blow em to bits or do we try to make friends and share technology, culture, and a slurpee?

Yeah, death to those Iocrym scum!

Um... wait a second...

When we first meet the Iocrym mothership, shouldn't we at least TRY to communicate with them (and they with us) before shooting each other to space flotsam?

Hmmm....

EDIT: This line of thought deserves it's own topic. Here:
