Is there any way to do this, either reducing the targeting range or increasing it?
I've looked through mods and did a search on targeting and didn't find anything that seemed relevant.

Does that work for the playership as well?Bobby wrote:You can adjust the AISettings tag on the ship in question. Increasing perception increases distance it can target (or see, I think, if a non player ship. the default is 4).

I'm assuming it does. I increased perception and I can cycle targets as far as I want.
perception=20 roughly correlates to 500 ls.

It increases but like many other things it has a definite limit, this one being 500 ls.
Not only can you target but you also have any station at about 1/4 that range show up on your map.
Thinking about making much more expansive systems, orbits at 9000 and possibly 15000 ls. We need a little black in this shiny game.
A good chance to put nav beacons to use instead of them being decoration.

I remember that Mutos was testing very large system and found limits to it (crashes if you spawn stations too far from the center and AI navigation problems)

I did some testing on perception.
The value of perception increases the range at which you can target an unknown object. Once you have had the object targeted, it seems to be possible to target it all the way to the max. The max value seems to be hardcoded at 500ls no matter the value of your perception.

um......does "fuel" enter any of those ideas?
I am sure players, even those that use mods require fuel.......
I am a fan if companion star systems but fuel is fuel: stations or ships: if you make a larger system: you NEED to think of Fuel for the player .

This is where shutting down non-important systems comes in handy. This includes all weapons, shields and devices, although shields might be optional if you fear running into a stray station in the middle of nowhere.
For anyone who doesn't know the "B" button this is a good chance to introduce yourself to it.
I haven't mesed with it a lot yet but so far 9000ls is doing fine. The expanse gives a good place to loose ships. They start chasing you and somehow don't know where you've gone. The trip out takes a while.
