Lost Empires
Some rather exciting news today! To me anyway. I have managed to get permission from a guy named N3mesis to use ship graphics from a mod he was working on for a game called Gratuitous Space Battles. The ships are from a variety of different Sci-Fi sources. There are dozens of ships from Star Trek alone (including many different types of Borg ships
), but also include ships from Battlestar Galactica (3 different models of Battlestar from the reimagined series, including the Galactica and Pegasus models), and Babylon 5. I will not be using every single ship from his mod (the Borg alone have more than 20 ships), but I will be using a lot of them. It's going to take me a while to convert them all, but I will be providing screenshots as soon as I get them working ingame.

Well, here is your first teaser....
The Valkyrie-class Battlestar:

(Note: According to my sources, the Valkyrie-class is "about the length of the Flight pod on a Galactica type battlestar", however since some stations in this game are bigger than the planets I see no reason I should make my ships to scale either.
It will be slightly smaller though.)
And the Galactica-class Battlestar:

(Note: There is some confusion about the class of the Battlestar Galactica. Some sources refer to it as a Columbia-class battlestar, but official sources call it the Galactica-class. The Columbia-class is similar in appearance but has more hull plating than the Galactica-class.)

I remember a BSG mod was in the works, and lots of ships were already made. I think it was digdug that was working on it, you could ask him (if he was making it) for some help with the graphics.

I'm not having much trouble converting them so far, but I'll keep that in mind. Making the Valkyrie a bit smaller is no trouble. It is just going to take me a lot of time to convert all of the ships since there are so many of them.
Just click on the thumbnail and it should take you to the full-sized image on imageshack. And here are the ones I converted today...alterecco wrote:They look great! Can we have a 100% sized image?
From Babylon 5, the Omega-class Destroyer with a wing of Starfuries. These did not scale down as well as the Intrepid or the Battlestars. Most of the original images were around 1024x1024 so there was a noticeable drop in quality when scaled down to 200x200, but still look decent enough to use. The darkness of the Omega didn't help much either. They are actually not as grainy-looking in game as they are in the screenshot. The screenshot was scaled down as well, but that was not intentional.

And from Star Trek, the Intrepid-class starship:

Yeah, for whatever reason, imageshack defaults to 800x600 and it seems I keep forgetting to change it to 1024x768. Anyway, here are the new converts for today...at the proper image size.alterecco wrote:also, i think imageshack is scaling down your images...

From Battlestar Galactica, the Mercury-class Battlestar (i.e. Pegasus), escorted by two different squads of Vipers - the ones on the left I am calling the Mk1 and the ones on the left I am calling the Mk2 though technically they are both Mk2s.

And from Star Trek, the Achilles-class ship escorted by a Delta Flyer (scout) and a squad of Type-9 Fighters (technically they are shuttles, but for this game's purposes I am calling them fighters).

The Vipers on the left were done by Darth Saber, though I did resize them. The ones on the right were done by N3mes1s.alterecco wrote:Those vipers look great! Nice job. I look forward to seeing them ingame.
Well, I don't have any more screenshots for you today but I'll be posting some tomorrow. I've converted 5 more ships since my last post (3 from Star Trek, 1 from Babylon 5, and 1 which I'm fairly certain is an original creation). I'll have converted at least one more by tomorrow.
I'm working on setting standards for ship sizes and will resize some ships appropriately when I decide the appropriate class for them. Fighters will be roughly 50x50. Destroyers will be around 100x100. Frigates will be around 150x150. Cruisers will be around 200x200. And Battleships and Carriers will be between 200x200 to around 250x250, but not much bigger than that.
OK, so here are the 5 new conversions I mentioned yesterday (I never got the chance to do the 6th one).
The big ship is called the Zhelom. This is the one I mentioned is an original design (as seen here: http://www.scifi-meshes.com/gallery/sho ... photo=1332). While it is called a Super Transport, for this mod's purposes it will serve as a rather wicked-looking carrier. The fighters in this screenshot are the Thunderbolt-class Starfuries from Babylon 5 (some of the more observant viewers may notice that the mask on the Thunderbolts isn't working...it will be fixed).

It wouldn't be right to have Star Trek ships without including the Galaxy-class:

The Defiant. I've classified it as a Destroyer and thus made it 100x100, but it still feels like it should be smaller. What do you think?

And last, but certainly not least, the Akira-class....

Some of you may have noticed by now that I have not created unique shield images for each ship. This will probably be done once I finish adding new ships.

Yeah, I think I'll reduce it to 80x80 and see how that looks. The fighters are 50x50, so I don't want to make it that small considering the Defiant has a small shuttle bay.
I have added a poll to the first post so people can vote on their favorite potential name for this mod. If you'd like to suggest a name, feel free to post it here and if I like it I'll add it to the poll.
