I was thinking it might be fun to have a competition to see who can make the best ship. My idea was that modders enter a mod with a single ship, and the ships fight each other in a tournament, which can be video recorded so everyone can see it. The ships have to follow very specific guidelines:
devices have a maximum level of 7(or close, see the possible rules), and the levels of the devices cannot total higher than 42 (six level 7 devices), so you can't add 6000 particle canons.
Code cannot change incoming or outgoing damage or weapon fire. This means no sysCreateWeaponFire or shpRepairArmor commands.
Ships can change weapons or other devices in combat, but the configuration can never exceed level 40 and a device over level 7 cannot be installed.
ONLY vanilla devices are allowed. Custom ship graphics are allowed.
no domina powers like in Fellow pilgrims; no coded ability can cause damage to the other ship or grant invincibility (no matter how brief)
only one ship is allowed per entry. Ships cannot clone themselves into an armada.
Some other rules I'm not sure about:
Ships cannot modify the other ship
Ships cannot be smaller or faster than the hornet gunship, maybe some classes could be used:
light: ships the size and maneuverability from the hornet to the Ronin. Max device level: 4 max total level: 24
medium: size and maneuverability from Ronin to Antares V max level: 6 max total level: 36
heavy: must be slower than the Antares V, max level: 8 max total level: 48
Other than that, anything goes. A lot of it is AI and ship design, but if you get an idea for an ability that doesn't violate any rules, then it can be used.
This was just some ideas, and wondering if there was any interest among modders in this. It's a lot to organize, but I think it could be fun.
Anyone interested in a Modding Competition?

TRANSTASTIC idea !!!!!!!!
( EDIT )
* i just realized i saw that word recently in a news article.......just stop laughing and hold the Role
-------------
However for the idea : I wish i was a good as the rest of you with graphics , but I KNOW RPC, Christian and TheLastBrunnenG will be in the top 5.

Ok, I'm in!
However, I have a few questions:
1. Carriers: can we have them? Can they do maintenance on their fighters?
2. You said that no code can modify incoming damage, but can we have the AI ship teleport?
3. How about omni weapons? I'm pretty sure all moddere will turn weapons into an Omnidirectional one.
I'll ask more questions when I come up with any.
Edit: what about ships with particle shields?
Edit2: what If modders put noncritical=true for all armorsegments?

1. At first I thought that there shouldn't be carriers, since you could easily build an armada and kill everything. I think thought that if the equipment on the ships on the carrier counted toward the total level, and the ships followed all the rules, then it could work.RPC wrote:Ok, I'm in!

2. I think that teleporting could be allowed, as long as there are restrictions (maybe the ships can't teleport more frequently than 3 seconds? And they have to have a jumpdrive onboard, counting towards their max level)
3. I think that only weapons in vanilla should be allowed, to prevent someone from making the Omnidirectional dark lightning laser of ultimate destruction. Only omnidirectional weapons in vanilla should be allowed. (maybe though if the community agrees to allow a modded weapon in, it could be allowed, but it would have to be controlled)
Edit1. I think that since particle shields tend to make things invincible, that ships can't use code to call anything up to block the way of incoming shots, so no shield stations or particle shields.
Edit2. Good point. To control it, I think that no armor can have noncritical="true" on any armor.

The real winner will use respawning XM900's and superconducing coils. And respawning armor. And respawning patch spiders.

I think I said something about graphics being no smaller than the hornet. Yeah, I did consider that. Of course, the solution to a 1x1 ship is tracking missiles and area effect. Lots of area effect.

There should probably be armor seg limitations esp. on tiny ships.

right, but since there is a maximum level for the total levels of the devices, which includes armor, if you spend all your levels in armor, then you won't have the firepower to kill anyone else.

Obviously entries should have no cargo.Atarlost wrote:The winner will use some cheap trick like a hold full of superconducting coils and XM-900s.
Also, we should standardize ship configs to have 4 armor segments and no NonCritical segments.

Yeah, I think that would be best.RPC wrote:Obviously entries should have no cargo.Atarlost wrote:The winner will use some cheap trick like a hold full of superconducting coils and XM-900s.

4 segs would promote small ships only; which is why I was saying earlier that the armor segs should be tied to the size of the ship.
IE, hornet size+ gets 1 seg
windslaver size+ gets 2 segs
Wolfen size+ gets 4 segs
so on, so forth, with non-crit general segs being allowed on the larger capital/sub-capital sizes

That could work, but it makes the whole thing more complicated when you get into a complicated class system. There is also a problem in using noncritical armor segments because if you set every segment to noncritical, the ship becomes unkillable.
