The gate ID is the name the gate has in the topology. In vanilla they will usually return Inbound or Outbound, since those are the gates used. They can't be used as spaceobjects.

As far as i know they are freely named. You can use them to describe the location the gate leads to, or any scheme you come up with. They are basically used to differentiate one gate from another.
