The economy in .98 is very different than in past versions. Fuel costs are something to think about now and early reactors are expensive now.
Personally I just had a game where I had no Mining Colonies or mining lasers and I still managed. (that reactor skip that the freighter gets is big now)
How are other people finding the changes?

I'm finding that where you sell your loot is more important now. There seems to be a wider variety of prices than before; but generally a lot less payed for loot.
Early on the Korolov & Ag. Station missions: I don't think the rewards have changed; since it is overall harder to get credits that is a relative increase in the rewards.
I've still found being a drug runner for the BM to be a chief source of income for the early to mid game. Depends on how many BM stations, of course.
Ice Farms are nice bonuses still.
Haven't done much mining. Doesn't seem to fit with the tempo of the game, IMO. It isn't required, so it doesn't matter if it is there or not.

I've done a bit of "casual mining", that is, installed the laser because it's a good weapon and shot any rocks I happened to pass. It pays off sometimes, like with a hold full of Duralloy.
Volcanics rocks will give you really valuable stuff, unlike the regular dirt ones which have a high chance of titanium- so use that special system to hop to a system with volcanic rocks and mine some good ores- a dangerous variation of the "hop forward and buy/loot cool stuff" tactic.

Hey how are you all doing? I finally gave up on my old one with millenium edition and got a new desktop and now i finally had some time to wreak havoc in space once again!
This is a big change, selling loot is now average when it used to be easy and gets hard when it used to be a bit slow. I was very happy to find a hotel altho in the first four systems i got four altogether which is a lot. I had a mine and a tinker and found out converting duralloy ore makes you loose cash now and selling it is hardly worth the trouble, winnings only at the corporate.
I thought i found something wrong at the armsdealer but couldn't pin it down, i bought a + 10% omnilaser canon and got it for free! But i'm not sure on that .. (sorry, but credits go up and down fast i shouldn't need to keep track)

I don't thing the rebalance was good, because it seems impossible to buy anything after SK's till ringer space at the least.
I haven't had any (more than usual) shortage of money, I think the economy is more balanced than it has ever been. There's always been way too much money available late game (mostly because all money sinks are basically optional- precious few operating costs. )

Are you saying that you haven't found any stations that sell stuff?(name here) wrote:I don't thing the rebalance was good, because it seems impossible to buy anything after SK's till ringer space at the least.
or, Are you saying that you don't have any credits to buy the stuff?
Right, and since i make a habit of going out of my way to sell at the best possible price i'll easily spend ten minutes for each load of arms or armor, looting a number of corsairs and windslavers along the way. I do lots more of jettisoning cargo now. The changes are going in the right direction but it needs more polishing.
The Makayev energia stations and early Rasiermessers could buy undamaged stuff at low prices. And the barrels are a mess, new types of barrels were added but are being sold hardly anywhere and these barrels weigh 1 ton as always but you need a CW to sell them. Or Thor's i think. So they too should be bought and sold at armordealers and/or some types of weapondealers.

Both, actually. I couldn't afford a katana, and i couldn't find a MX.Are you saying that you haven't found any stations that sell stuff?

A katana is only around 40,000 credits.
It must be that you aren't exploring/exploiting all of the income possibilies to not have 40,000, and more, to spare by the time you leave St. Katherine's Star. Or you are having extraordinarily bad luck with system generation.
It is harder now to gain credits; but still... You can almost make that much in Charon and St. K.'s alone.

Earning credits and Rins hasn't been too much of a problem for me with this new economy, but I am finding myself having to ditch or pass up a lot of loot anymore. Before, I used to loot and sell everything I could find and now, I'll only loot what is most profitable.
That's an advantage for those who know the game and play it regularly, but for nubes...I think it's going to be hit and miss until they become familiar as well.
I also think that the Tinkers are effected by the new economy, in that as stated above, certain loot will be bypassed in favor of more profitable ones... Meaning that it's less likely that one will tote damaged items around while waiting for a Tinkers when there's better and more profitable loot to be had/sold. This may not hold true for Freighters, however.

So if you play without cargo expansion i think it means you need to ditch stuff often and spend more time transporting. It takes more fuel and more time which i'm not thrilled about.
Maybe it should be a separate thread but i'll whine some more regarding armor, barrels and the armordealers. Barrels could all weigh 500 kilo that's half of what they weigh now. Barrels are not being bought and sold in adequate amounts or the type i want is not there. Armordealers will sell a selection from a set of 8 or so and it's always limited except for ablative coating and repair paste. (one game i managed to use all the repairpaste
In that game i got 4 armordealers and found 3 Gusoku plates in Lalande, the 2nd system.)
Sometimes i can buy a superconducting shield early in the game and also on very rare occasions i'll find some of the coils that go with them in a CW station. But it doesn't come about in the same game, if this is meant as an option for the player it's too bad cos it never happens.

Another thing about mining, discovered the "quick way":
Get laser reflect armor.
Destroy enemy mining colonies, leaving Borers intact.
Disable shield and fly around asteroids.
I only manged it with two Borers (only one segment reflect
) but was reflecting lasers into asteroids and even the missed shots were hitting. Much loot.
