This was just annoying as possible. I had a freighter with the stock omni-laser still on it, and no targeting rom. I picked up a defective auton and used it. Big mistake. The piddly little rate of fire on the omni-laser means that I can't take down it's shields. I can survive if I dodge a little bit, but that gets old really fast.
Perhaps designating the defective auton as red would be possible? I mean, after all...it IS trying to kill you.
Defective autons and the starting freighter
I've had the same problem before. Making it red would allow for two things:
1: You can target it more effectively.
2: Friendly ships with bigger guns will kill it for you.
I think this should be done- it doesn't make sense for an enemy to appear as an ally on the radar.

I've also had the same problem with the defective auton. And there are several options to use to destroy it whenever you don't have the targeting ROM installed... but I'm not going to say what they are. That'd take the fun out of solving the menace yourself.
As for changing its description to enemy "red", I'd have to disagree...it IS a friendly auton but remember it is also defective! It has a malfunction in its programming. So instead of changing it to red status, I'd suggest for an Auton Repair ROM be implemented that when used, would recalibrate its programming to normal status...easily coded.
Or another option, why not have the auton dealers repair 'em?
Still a challenge with finding such a ROM or an auton dealer, but it would make more sense to go that route.
Also remember that bounties are green as well, not red...

Actually, I've never had bounty hunters after me. I like the Black market too much.
I do understand the logic behind leaving it green. Ideally, it would remain green to everyone except you. That way you could still shoot it with omni-weapons.
That's my main beef: You can't shoot 'hostile friendlies' with omni weapons without a targeting rom. One more reason why I'd rather use a Trenton shield than play as the freighter...

re Defective Autons
Leave them as they are, they are a good challenge. If they are too tough: leave the system, the defective auton won't leave with you. Come back later and blow it into smithereens with your Akan-600 enhanced +150%
As you do.
