I think it would be great if you could hire wingmen from somewhere.
You would be able to select from a list your wingman, including what ship they fly in.
Not quite sure what the ideal means of payment would be though. At first, I was considering having a commission type deal, where either you pay the wingman for each craft they kill, or they take a percentage from credits you earn. Perhaps the best method of payment would be 1credit/period. Period being perhaps every two minutes for a mediocre wingman in a rusty corsair, 1/1minute for a quality wingman, 1/30seconds for a veteran wingman, 1/1second for a fabulous elite killer bastard killer 8)
Those are just examples. I find I get so many hundreds of thousands of credits towards heretic, I could probably afford a fabulous elite killer bastard killer 8) or two as wingmen.

One system for hiring mercenaries in other games I've seen that I liked worked thusly: You had to supply them with a useful piece of equipment to hire them. That could be a fun alternative to credits; select among paying them in fuel, paying them in equipment (which they would then use on their ship), or paying them in credits, rin, whatever.

I like both commission per ship as well as bonus equipment as a payment for mercenaries. They would also have a "stay here command" but would disband or follow you if you went through a gate. Also how about having mercenaries hired at Corporate Enclaves? Teraton and Ringer stations would be nice for late-game help as well.
