Ah, George, I'd like to preface this with saying that I don't neccessarily want you to change this - but when you put a config tag like omnidirectional="true" or a specific minAngle/maxAngle into a device line of a shipType, was it intentional for that device 'slot' to keep that effect after the weapon had been removed?
Basically, I discovered this when I had changed the device line to include minAngle="180" maxAngle="180" for a NAMI mine launcher on a ship I use for debug. When I replaced the mine launcher with another missile launcher in-game however, it continued to fire backwards.
I did some further experimentation by starting a game with a Penitent cannon with omnidirectional="true" in the device line, and then replaced it with a regular laser cannon. Lo and behold, it was omnidirectional.
Residual hardpoint - bug or design?
Yugi, think of some of the possibilities. You can have one of your destroyer class ships have a permanent turret in - say the first slot. Which makes sense, as they would have the structural integrity to support one.
Imagine, a Fichikai warship with a turret that could take a Hanzo blaster, or even a Qianlong Archcannon!

Very nice find there. I'm going to use that on my pirate ship mod - 3 guns on each side
