Even a weak shield of some kind would be good.
Add regeneration of some type with the items around and they (meteorsteel armors) could be reasonable alternatives to the heavy shield dependancy of the game.
Heavy shields right now are really a requirement, and I always like alternative viable set ups in any RPG.
Meteorsteel + Shields
I've pondered this thought a time or two as well and figured the Superconducting Shield would be another good candidate that's useable with meteorsteel. That and the Hull plate Ionizer seem to be the most practical and reasonable shields, IMHO. Maybe the Trenton as well, for later game-play but that may be a little too powerful in combo with Worldship armor.
I think allowing an unadulterated Trenton to be compatible with meteorsteel would simply be too unbalanced.
A crystal could be used to enhance any powerful shield to be compatible with meteorsteel/worldplates. The crystal would have a nasty side effect though, increasing its power usage by 50% and decreasing its effectiveness by 50%.
One bummer about it would be of course that you wouldn't be able to enhance the shield with a more useful crystal (namely Ion-reflect).
This is my prefered option. I think it would balance nicely, and give the player the option of using various shields.
