Barricades
They do as their name implies. You can use them to place a barricade around your ship and rotate them in one of four directions (must dock with one to do this). If your ship can support their mass, you could also use them as armor segments if you had to.
They're handy for defense missions like point juno or the ag station - provided you have a freighter or lots of mules because they are quite heavy. Any other situation and they probably aren't worth the weight - however if there are enemies close to where you found them it might be worth it just to set them up in case - comes in handy when there's a wreck full of em next to the citadel.

Spoiler!
It is possible, using barricades, to save the charon station. you've got to be quick about it, putting barricades all around the station and rotating them right, you've got to have a powerfull enough weapon to kill the people off quickly enough thereafter, but once all the enemies are dead, the station is saved!
the bad news is, if you do this, you get nothing! the station becomes just a normal station.
