Can this be manually defined, or must all star-gates be set to 128x128 images to look properly?
Can custom gate effects be used as well?

I just did some tests and you can change the stargate image to anything (I tested a nebula and rsShipInterior at 600x400) however, the gate zone seems to be hard coded.
The only way around it would be to have an event auto-gate the player like digdug suggested.
